Thread regarding Sears layoffs

12 Kmart List

Alright. First of all, I must admit, I am rarely stopped, but I didn't see this one coming. In my last list, I predicted that perhaps Miami, Hato Rey, Hamilton, or such, would close. Nope! None of them, for now. But the last store in Bronx is confirmed (via SB360's link, which someone else was nice enough to share).
I called the store a little while back, and they denied it's closing, but maybe they just didn't Know. Anyway, a SB360 link is good enough for me, so I removed the last Bronx NYC Kmart from this list.
In retrospect, it makes good sense, though. They closed Massapequa Sears suddenly, to move stuff to Brooklyn which was liquidating. Similarly, it's now obvious that they suddenly closed the other Bronx store (Bruckner Kmart), so they could move all the product to THIS Kmart (Baychester, only 4 miles away), in order to just liquidate it here.
Now, some tidbits, because I feel like writing, LOL. Amazingly, Montana and New York both have the exact same number of non-closing Kmarts (welcome to the 1-store state, club, NY).
And Montana (population about 1 million) has more Kmarts than Texas (about 30 million) and California (40 million) combined! Think about it! There are about 70 million people in CA, & TX, combined, with zero Kmarts, yet the tiny, extremely rural town, of Hamilton Montana still has one.
And the entire of NYC will have zero Kmarts, but the small, niche, Beach community, of Bridgehampton NY (almost 100 miles east of NYC), will still have 1 (for now anyway).

Once again, not a single hair on Guam, USVI, FL, or NJ's Kmarts have been touched. And PR remains for now, although they are closing a small-format Sears (as listed on SB360, Nanjanito, or however it's spelled).

Final housekeeping, all the mainland US Kmarts are now in Eastern Time Zone, Or Mountain (thank you Montana). Obviously, the territorial stores in Guam, USVI, & PR, are in their respective Time Zones.

OK, I'll shut up now, so here is the list:

We are now at 12 Kmarts total, 6 of which are in the US. I have changed my map to reflect this as well:

FLORIDA

  1. KEY WEST
  2. MIAMI

MONTANA

  1. HAMILTON

NEW JERSEY

  1. AVENEL
  2. WESTWOOD

NEW YORK

  1. BRIDGEHAMPTON

TERRITORIES:

GUAM

  1. TAMUNING, GU -P

PUERTO RICO

  1. HATO REY -P

USVI

  1. ST. CROIX -P
  2. ST. CROIX
  3. ST. THOMAS -P
  4. ST. THOMAS

Statistics: Kmart absent in 46 states. Now we have 2 states, MT, & NY, with only 1. There are 6 Kmarts in United "States", mainland, total. Of those in the US, zero, have a pharmacy. There are 4 pharmacies in the territories, marked with letter "P".
Additionally, Puerto Rico has 1 Kmart, USVI has 4, Guam has 1, so there are 6 total stores outside of the U.S. mainland. (I am making the distinction of U.S. mainland, because someone was recently trolling about the territories being states, or something, and although they are wrong, I don't have the patience to argue about nonsense). Total of 12 total Kmarts left as of now, that are not closed or closing.

States with more than 1 Kmart:

FL: 2
NJ: 2

P.S.: I will contact local media about this immediately so we can soon generate some external links. Good Night.

No, only the 50 United States are among the 50 United States. The territories are among the United territories. All of the above are in the United States and Territories.

"We are now at 12 Kmarts total, 6 of which are in the US"

I will correct this all day, everyday. Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands are part of the US. People born in these territories are US citizens. To suggest that they are not part of the United States is offensive.

@5dgv+1dqfjBj8 Thousands of people shopped at Bradlees too, but that was before they closed. Zero have done so, since then. 1000's of stores were liquidated without SB360 before 2020. Zero Sears or Kmart, stores have been liquidated without SB360 since then (some, like Astor place were closed but not liquidated). SB360 has the contract for any liquidations going forward, without exception. No Sears/Kmart store since Jan. 2021 has been LIQUIDATED without SB360, and none ever will be.

Thousands of stores have closed without being on SB360.

Everything on SB360's page is closing. However, a small number of stores have been closed without going through SB360 liquidation.

Sb360 is accurate. Their site has never been wrong yet. 100% of the stores listed on their website have closed or will close. They only list the stores that they purchase (obviously to liquidate). Here, 12 delicious, "juicy ones": https://www.sb360.com/select-projects/events/sears-list/

I contacted an author about writing an online article for Bronx. He replied that he will Tomorrow, so let's wait & see. We might finally have that coveted external, media link. Those are useful, because Wikipedia doesn't accept SB360 links for editing Kmarts article.

@hqc+1dqfjBj8 You don't "let" anyone do anything. This list was accurate when the OP wrote it.
@jat+1dqfjBj8 Hamilton is not "safe". Every other Kmart in Montana (many in towns of a similar size to Hamilton) have closed. Consider the Cost of sending a warehouse truck specifically to Hamilton with no other stores nearby to stop at. In fact, there is no other Kmart within 2000 miles of Hamilton (once Grass Valley CA closes). Literally none.
@1yfe+1dqfjBj8 Nobody cares what you believe. This is the list here, nobody cares about Reddit. This is the Layoff Site. Troll elsewhere.

Thanks again for this list, OP.

@jat+1dqfjBj8 Um, no. It's turn didn't just come yet. There were a ton of Kmart's in MT, there was 1 by me in Glendive until a few Years back. So why did they close? They were small ones like Hamilton. The same Tax rules applied there too but they still closed.

Which one do you think will close next? I'm betting the Miami Kmart since there is a Walmart and Target both within 2 miles of that Kmart, no reason that Kmart needs to be there with those two stores around.

@ncx+1dqfjBj8 Yep, TUTU (LOL), Guam, and Montana will probably be the last 3 Kmarts. I think Lampert is doing that just to troll us, LOL, so he can keep seeing the word "tutu" written, LMAO!!!!

Looks like the Master Kmart List which is officially located on the Kmart Reddit has now been updates, so I will now let you state that there are 12 Kmarts remaining.

Hamilton has several things going for it that none of the others have. It's tiny, and I mean tiny- around 40,000 sq ft. This small size means extremely low overhead. Second, the state doesn't have a sales tax. Travelers will want to shop in Montana, because they don't charge you sales tax on your purchases! Third, Target and Walmart will avoid it like the plague because they've got Missoula covered. Missoula is about 40 miles north of Hamilton, so it'll take Hamilton residents quite a drive to reach it. Last, Hamilton is crazy abundant with RV parks. See for yourself:

https://www.campendium.com/montana/hamilton#bounds=((45.97343583571342%2C+-114.98273648241849)%2C+(46.93277176682747%2C+-113.13428677538734))&zoom_level=8.00000000000003¢er_of_map=%7B%22lng%22%3A-114.05851162890264%2C%22lat%22%3A46.45521625902225%7D

This gives Hamilton a leg up on even Guam, the larger store with larger overhead. Hamilton being so tiny has virtually no overhead. You know how all these other Kmart's are getting massive amounts of their stores blocked off, because they can't fill it? Hamilton doesn't have that problem, because it's so tiny. It also sits alone in its own building as the parcel next to it is still grass, and never developed- Kmart opened there in 1988, and the piece of land next to it still sits empty 33 years later! With it being its own building, and not having been upgraded to a Big Kmart all it has are home goods, and general merchandise, there are no groceries. This means people go there for clothing or needed items during RV stays in one of their parks. It's a perfect location for Kmart, and Hamilton. The fact its Big Kmart upgrade fell through is another positive, becuase it doesn't compete with grocery stores like the others do. There is literally no competition for Kmart in Hamilton for 40 miles, in an RV area of a state with no sales tax. Until Target or Walmart want to go with a 40,000 sq ft building, or buy the parcel next to it to expand to a normal 80,000 sq ft building, Hamilton's will remain safe.

I can't believe the Westwood Kmart is still alive! Yes I know I'll get down-voted, but who cares! I hope it makes it to the final 10!

Target cannot enter the Puerto Rico market unless they can resolve a trademark conflict with the long-established Target rental car company there.

This one store closing represents almost 8% of open stores. Almost 15% of the stores in the continental US! And only 0.5% of Kmart stores that once existed remain!

@poi+1dqfjBj8 Guam and USVI have less competition because they don't have Walmart or Target that's why those are dodging closing lists lately

I was not surprised that they announced a small format store (aka Sears Home & Life) in Naranjito PR I was actually expecting the Hato Rey PR Kmart or Sears to be on that list of closings but why not Hamilton MT I mean sure it has a historic logo (which is why they are keeping it open for now) can't wait for the continental US to have 0 Kmarts left
Again I'm not trying to be negative I just have a point because Walmart and Target are everywhere in the states so what's the whole damn point of keeping them open in the states if Walmart and Target are around I mean face it Kmart has been closing stores since the 1980s (yeah they started closing store in the 1980s) and 1990s and the 2002/03 bankruptcy Kmart has the longest store closings in history
I would say longer then any other retailer has

Since Bronx was added to SB's list simultaneously, with Grass Valley CA, I'm assuming that they would probably also be closing on December 19, but I'm not certain about that. Either way, this store ain't seeing 2022. Since the listings are coming quickly now, anyone want to Wager a guess as to how many Kmarts make it into 2022?

The only ones that I am pretty sure won't be closing soon, are Guam, USVI, and Montana(😂😆🤣😁😅😏😉). Other than that, all Bets are off, & anything goes. We could see the rest of them go this Week, or they could drag out into 2022, we simply don't Know.
