Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Hunger Games

People are really on edge lately about the ranking/layoffs.
Employees look at each other as competitors as we walk around campus.
People feel compelled to speak up in meetings to state the obvious in an effort to show their knowledge.
It is really awkward.

What other stupid observations have you seen?

When are the ranking sessions? When are all ranking sessions completed?

A well-worn XOM playbook. Treat people as disposable.

-95% feedback about the "room for improvement"

  • annual raise is like a slap in the face
  • a promotion promised got pushed to next year - again and again

I have a bit of grey hair. I am obviously retirement eligible.
I get extremely hateful looks from strangers that appear to be at or near my age. These people do not know me but automatically have a hateful reaction just passing me in the hallway.

EM Executives foster this work environment with the 5% annual layoff that is based on a twisted system of who gets high profile assignments through sponsorship and who gets ranked at the bottom based on lack of sponsorship or retribution for upsetting a sponsor level person with truth and facts.

EM has become the company we tell our children not to interview at, except sponsor level people who can arrange Spinsors for their nepotism kids.

@a4, if they heed your advice and take one for the team, can't come back 3 months later as an annuitant "consultant" @$250/hr.

Work for the salary, and not for the company because that belongs to someone else.

It honestly reminds me of the movie 'The Good Doctor'. The way people sabotage each other's work at EM. I’m just grateful it’s not a hospital, because they would’ve done the same thing to their patients just to get ahead in this corporate hunger game. I didn’t know people could be this nasty until I started my industrial journey at EM. How can you be this dead inside that you’re willing to ruin someone else’s life for a ranking.

@fa, @j6 Those are the verbiage they have to use to go up the ladder "helped" "mentored" " couched" "led"....how you present your more is way more important than how you do it

There was a Chief that retired in January.

Management thought he was great and flew him around the world constantly to audit projects.

Those projects hated that id--t and all the knowledgeable working people made jokes about him.

He would arrive at site and ask people what were there major challenges and what actions were being taken. He would then make a PowerPoint listing the problem that HE FOUND, and suggestions that HE DEVELOPED. Management would congratulate him as if he were their savior.

EM stock likely went up in value when that leach retired.

Many of these Chiefs are simply publicity artists that were better at PowerPoint that the truly knowledgeable people.

@fa, hey, keep it clean. No more talk of loose managers and their slots.

There’s an older guy here who’s been dreaming of being a “chief” before he retires, so he’s spent years tossing people under the bus to make it happen. Helping push out teammates, stealing, claiming leadership/mentorship... And of course, he finally got promoted to Principal. Since each section only gets two Principals, his looser manager just reassigned another principal to another team to open a slot for him. Peak organizational excellence.

So many people on campus appearing weary. They look at me as if I am a competitor.
Another couple of months before communications of who survived to enjoy another year of misery and who is released to find an undefined new career that is likely much more enjoyable.
This must be terrible for our mental health and physical health.

I am hoping for 1 more year. This the worst so far I’ve seen since I’ve been here. Everything is breaking and never gets fixed as another reorg occurs . The politics on the Reorgs are rather incestual .

10% of EM employees are truly good people. With a 5% layoff target this year, half will be gone.

The backstabbers that claim credit for the work of others become a higher % of EM employees every year.

This is one of the root causes of the horrific culture at EM.

People remember how you treated them long after they forget rankings, org charts, and who spoke the most in meetings. Character outlasts all of it. Hard times reveal character, and lately, I've learned not everyone has as much of it as I once thought.

The people quitting now are the ones who secured new jobs ahead of the August layoff.

The market will be flooded with candidates when the annual NSI layoff occurs.

Toxic workplaces aren’t created by companies — they’re created by the people leadership refuses to confront. Culture is just the shadow of what leaders tolerate.
And when they protect the wrong people, the best people walk away.

Ranking sessions wrap up by the end of June, and every year it’s the same show. I could write a whole book on how people push others down to get ahead, or sabotage anyone who threatens their comfort. Doesn’t matter the age or gender, some people are just wired wrong. They look human on the outside, but the mask slips fast.

I see announcements for people retiring. Those people should wait a few months, take one for the team, and get 3 months additional salary.
