U.S. Oil and Gas Jobs Plummet Despite Record Production

Time to look for a new job

U.S. oil and gas companies are using automation and outsourcing to reduce their workforce, despite record production levels.
The oil and gas industry is not expected to see job growth, and wages are declining.
The trend of job losses in the oil and gas sector mirrors the decline of the coal industry.

@e2 Best of luck to you on finding another job. Know that the relocation of your role to TX is only temporary and your replacement will likely be pip’d off within 5 years. Once EMTE execs fully execute the master plan, a few key jobs tied to businesses or those involved in managing outsourced work will remain in the US. Most EMTE jobs will reside in India or other tech center. Research at EM is dead. Signed, 08801

@mv, My sacred messiah just left office and is the one who is completely and totally honest, never lies and never makes false promises and neither he nor his associates have ever used any government agency to attack or arrest opponents for political gain.

See Chevron’s creation of an Innovation Center in India. Those 8000 US employees told it will free their time up to be more innovative - Ha Ha. Those work transitions are starting now.

Truly, a tariff or other tax on imported services would shut this down. But, why isn’t the Mesiah that was just elected not talking about saving YOUR jobs via a tariff on services? Such a tariff would be paid by the Corporations importing these services and not by the general populace unlike tariffs on stuff from Walmart, car parts, and appliances. Answer- follow the money.

@j6, That's an interesting concept but most US employees wont' work for less and falsely claim that they are as much or more efficient at home. lol. Let's see how that works out for them. lmao.

@a1+1jj7hyxc1 These employees are able to work on projects remotely at a lower cost.

From the above sentence from your post many companies could also hire Americans that want to work remotley and pay them less than the workers in the office. A 20-30% pay reduction would keep many remote employees in America happy and still perform at a high level.

Less pay and benefits

Another concern for oil and gas workers is the decrease in pay and benefits. As fossil fuel companies look to boost efficiency, many firms are no longer paying employees as well as they once were. Average pay before the pandemic stood at around 60 percent more than that of jobs in manufacturing, construction and other related industries. By late 2024, this figure declined to just over 30 percent.

Great we are the next coal industry

According to a New York Times analysis of federal data, companies that extract, transport, and process oil and gas employ around 25 percent fewer workers than they did around a decade ago when they produced less. With an oil glut expected in 2025, producers are cutting costs, with spending expected to decline by around 3 percent in North America this year, which will likely mean more job cuts.

This trend has previously been seen in the coal industry, with several regions of the U.S. falling into an economic depression as thousands of workers in coal-rich regions lost their jobs. While the number of jobs in the renewable energy sector is continuing to grow year on year, an employment rebound in the oil and gas sector seems unlikely.

Key paragraph:

In addition to improving efficiency and automation, some companies are now outsourcing jobs. For example, Exxon Mobil and Chevron are just two of the companies to hire engineers and geologists in India because of the cheaper labour available. These employees are able to work on projects remotely at a lower cost.
