Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Fear will not motivate people to work

Nowhere have I experienced so much micromanagement as here. Clearly, they are using fear to try to get people to do the best they can. The effects are mostly exactly the opposite. Everyone is more or less demotivated, they work the bare minimum and try to find a way out. Is it a matter of great distrust in employees or is incompetence the reason why they do not try to get the best out of employees in any other way?

The supervisor’s were not hired based on skill. The were diversity hires and have no clue about how to manage teams. I’ve been working here 10 months and I’m on my 3rd supervisor and have survived 2 layoffs in HIT. Just ignore the brainless and do your work with the patients a priority. Because imposing unobtainable metrics is effecting the patient. Their health and finances are effected negatively. This company is clearly “ profit over people”. And if you say something it becomes more of a hostile working environment. They target people who speak up. Just do the best you can and if they lay you off ask yourself… is it really a bad thing?

Indian management at its finest: Immature, bombastic, power-hungry, toxic corporate cucks willing to sell their souls for more power.

It is as the above posts say. I started less than a year ago and I am sadly disappointed at how clueless supervisors are and keep asking myself, how did they get hired? I feel like I’m in high school with all the petty people that work here. I’m embarrassed to tell anyone I work in this cess pool of toddlers and angry wanna be activists.

Is a “negative” comment code words for truth / reality?

@iztl+1gO98FOY I fail to see how making a comment about why a person might be micromanaged makes me a "rule follower" or in anyway implies any of the rest of your reply. I was just making an observation on why I have seen people micromanged. You might have me confused with someone else, but certainly complain to HR if you must, they always help people, just read the posts on this site discussing how helpful they are.

Micromanagement is either all the time or targeted for a reason. I can only assume the reason, due to the mention of fear is targeted. I have seen both tactics at this company over time.
Did you do something to bring the heat down upon you? How do you compare to the rest of your team? Are you skills redundant and needed based of the projects you are doing? I agree with the other poster. Either you did not perform up to expectations or you are being managed for a layoff.

@hcbj+1gO98FOY - You sound like a "rule follower" type of girl. You talk a good game but can't put up... You got the job because someone lied about your skills but the truth will come out. You'll be let go again and this time it will not be a layoff. Someone will make a complaint to HR or someone will hear how you rude and catty you are and you'll be fired. I've seen it happen... only difference was that person was a manager.... watch your step.

I have found when someone becomes micromanaged out of the blue, there is one of 2 reasons, they ain't doing sh-t and someone finally noticed or they are being watched so the boss can document smallest failure to produce so they can set up to let them go. i am guessing your not in the 1st category. If you are... you've had a good run and got caught, deal.
Are you also finding your responsibilities being given to others? Are you asked to show others or cross train? Is there anything special you do that someone from offshore could not do? Are there new projects and your not included ? Meetings everyone else seems to be in and your not? If you answered yes to these questions, best get out before your fired for cause and have that on your resume!

How to motivate USians for work:

Real pension not self funded miserly nonsense
Employment contracts NOT employment at will doctrines
Real raises that meet inflation
Real health care that includes dental care and vision
4 weeks of vacation time starting from day 1.
Sick days, funeral time, moving time, graduation paid days off

I don't know where you work, but I work at optum. The hiring process was not intense, try Microsoft. My own team, there are at least 2 fake it till you make it workers. I would have replaced them with someone else by now. So I agree with that comment.

All companies have an intense hiring process. There's a system each employee goes through to test their skills and abilities. After being hired the employee has to meet metrics, goals and stats. If the employee is not meeting then its discussed in their evaluations or should be. If the employee is not meeting the expectations you would think company would take action. A good leadership would guide the employee with their experience and knowledge not only for retention but for the reputation of the company. The employee is a reflection of their own leadership. The last comment made no sense at all. That is why you see all these negative comments. Lala

it might be incompetence on the part of the hired not the manager in some cases. I have worked on several teams where I am not sure how or why they are in the position they are hired for. The manager may have hired based on a referral but later comes to learn that referral was unfortunately not accurate. There is a huge difference when someone answers a question that they are proficient in a required skill or technology and the range of what that definition truly means.

The managers hired do not have the skills to actually manage. They were promoted based on a "good'ol' boy" system. It's a toxic He11 H0le!

I wouldn't call it micromanagement at all. It's constant unstable changes and miscommunication due to lack of expirenced leadership. It's a never ending changing enviornment because it seems like they could never get the right balance on things. It drives the employees and the customers literally crazy. I would not step into a role if I knew I wasn't qualified for it even if I was encouraged to do so. Cutting around the corners to save money only costs more in the long run. Do what you know until you're let go. Never ever fake it to make because it shows to the people who are experienced.

I’ve dealt with it for 2.5 years and resigned for my well-being I worked myself to the bone and ultimately to burnout from never ending changes in micromanagement and chronic excessive mandatory OT. Note: Optum is notorious for treating their employees like recycled trash. I’ve seen 2 massive layoffs in my short time with them and was reminded that I’ve made the cut after each layoff. My best advice is 1) Watch what you do on your company computer because META tracks every little thing you do. You will be accountable for every lost second of time that is not related to work and be questioned upon it via 1on1 supervisor meetings. 2) Be careful who you socialize with on the clock. There are plenty of sharks in the water. 3) Play their mind games, find new work, and get out ASAP. 4) Decline an exit interview. Everything that you say via exit interview will be held and used against you for future reference. Good luck and I wish your mental health well.

This company uses autocracy method to govern the employees. If they would actually hire people based on their skills and not based on if they live in some small MN town... then you wouldn't have employees trying to scam out of doing their job!!!
