Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

No sugar coating please, you might not be ok after the lay off

Stop sugar coating, brace for impact.

Some will be hired by Qualcomm competetors without pay cut and get to stay in San diego. They are mostly from modem team or gpu team.

Some will be hired by smaller company with significant pay cut, but they can stay in san diego. They have skill sets that are somewhat sorted after.

Some will be able land a job in Bay area. But they have to commute between Bay area and SD weekly or biweekly since living coast in bay area is simply too high.

Some will change their career path completely. Engineer -> door dash driver.

Some will be forced to leave US after grace period for h1b expires.

Okay, I will not sugar coat it.

I am in my early 60's and was laid off and am okay with it. QC was the longest job I have had in my entire lifetime, before I got my degree and after, almost 15 years ago.

In the last 4 or 5 years I have been doing essential but ultimately pointless support work because QC didn't value this skill set. It was always "What have you done to get promoted?" when I clearly told my manager that I didn't want to get promoted I just wanted to work toward retirement.

Everyone eventually gets to this point in their career, every single one, it is inevitable. The problem with QC is that they don't recognize this reality. I am perfectly okay with being laid off, I am not okay with the enthusiastic young people I worked with who were laid off at the beginning of their careers with me.

@ive: Bay Area is not a guarantee of finding another job within weeks. Age can make the search significantly longer (especially those who are 60+). Many folks close to this bracket may be forced to retire. FYI - I worked most of my career in the Bay Area, I'm now retired.

I will never ever take an RTO job. WFH all the way.

@txu: Agree with you. SD is risky. In Bay Area, quality of life is bad in some respects and good in others. In Bay Area, you are almost guaranteed to find another job within weeks. SD was good during pandemic when $450k -$600k packages were available for anyone with even average skills. But those companies are not hiring anymore in SD, at least not as 2021-22. Many ppl I know are thinking of returning as WFH is not safe anymore anywhere.

@jdt yes, but not due to QC. The big recession next year will bring home prices down across the country not just in SD.

For the ones who have skills and willing to relocate, there seems to be a lot of opportunities
