Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

That moment

That moment when you realize that you invested nearly a third of your life into this place, that you put in so many nights and weekends to make sure things get done, that you often put your work over your family, and for what? To be treated like garbage and put on a PIP despite being one of the best and most experienced performers on your team. I'm done. I won't give them the satisfaction. I'm handing in my resignation today.

I have seen top performers PIP’d and I have seen id--ts so stupid that they are dangerous put on fast track to Executive level.

One Manager told me that he was verbally warned by a VP to not say anything about a certain sponsored employee’s catastrophes during an upcoming ranking meeting. Only praise and campaigning for RG80+ was acceptable even though the id--t was so stupid and arrogant that he should have been PIP’d.

I know one Supervisor that was tanked in ranking because he had been honest about poor performance of a sponsored young lady during a ranking meeting.

If you think the ranking system is fair, you are an id--t.

Very true about the phone call and rank list. I once had an office in GP that shared a wall with the area manager. I was working at my desk in my office while he was talking with someone on the phone saying "we need to move her ranking. Being above 80 RG makes all the difference". Really makes you question the whole mess.

I guess the lesson to be learned is (very XOM-ish): never put your family above anything. This should be a moral principle and applied to anything else you do in your life. I met this employee once that would brag how many times they got their wedding postponed because of work and all I could think was what would happen to this poor soul if they ever got fired or retired. I hope none of them are working for this company anymore since everybody seems to be eligible to get f-up.

You work hard because you want build up reputation and skillsets not because you want to sacrifice for your company this is capitalism you sound like you should live in China where sacrifice is appreciated

@isk+1cmGL9YP No one is forcing you to work beyond normal working hours. Never worked that hard in my career here and I am still ranking well.

Looks like you have an efficient or competency issue. You can sit in front of your screen all day and produce nothing.

I had a Project Executive put me on the Project Rank List as number 1 of XX. He received a phone call (not in writing) instructing him to place me no higher that 7 of XX.

Such manipulation of the ranking is done on the phone such that any future scrutiny would just show that the project submitted my name as 7th on the list in their final official ranking going into the roll-up.

The system is rigged to place people with sponsors and/or minorities at the top and fully competent workers are left at the bottom half struggling to stay out of the bottom 8%.

I will answer that. No. Never was paid for a lot of time when I was hourly and working Special projects. The lead of special project constantly reminded us the budget was tight and overtime not feasible. Then scheduled stuff outside of normal business hours.
And for MPT - working 12-16 hour days puts the salaries at laughing point and eliminates all work/life balance the company claims to provide.

I nearly committed su----e working until 3:00AM almost every night (then coming into the office at 6:30AM ) during planning season in 2020. Then I was laid off for my efforts at the end of the year. You are exactly right, this company is not worth investing your blood sweat and tears into. Everyone is on a 1 year contract, so take the red pill and open your eyes.

I actually had a Department Manager tell me in my PDS discussion that I was the best performer on my team but I cannot be ranked at the top for political reasons.

If you are at the top, it is because you have senior management sponsorship to put you there and to give you the high profile easy assignments to keep you there.

Politics means people at bottom are not always poor performers.

@Ex-Clinton - I am not joking about being the victimizer. Most people like to gloss over the time they pushed a Contractor a bit too hard, or were dismissive of a coworker because they were inefficient. Almost all employees at some point committed the same crimes we accuse our supervisors and executives of committing.

It’s important to acknowledge we were both victims and victimizers in order to help ourselves become better people.

@OP - I’ve been there. I feel your pain. I’m sure you’ll find a better place to work.

@xlb - for over a year now, your statement has been proven and shown to be false. Don’t be such an a-ho-e.

@Mr DW - I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and will assume that you’re being sarcastic. You’re certainly not funny. There’s nothing the OP’s statement to show that he or she has ever had the power or position to be a “victimizer”.

Were you not paid in accordance with your contract? Many nights and weekends, perhaps you were inefficient as compared to your peers? Did you have a frank conversation with your supervisor on your performance?

I am glad you have chosen to move on.

Sounds like you had no problem with it until you drew the short straw.

Now think about how many time you perpetrated this system onto other less powerful coworkers?

Sickening isn’t it to be both victim and victimizer.
