Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

"Family Reasons"

When quitting this place the best & only reason to give is "family". To avoid what kind of trouble? Why you can't say "I found another opportunity" or "I need a change from this environment" or simply "no reason" ? What kind of retribution are the sheep afraid of ?

I had a strong family reason for leaving: I found that my older brother and sister are my real parents. This is not a strong reason for leaving, but the news from West Virginia made me feel homesick. My boss understood and helped process me out of the KSA.

"Family or Personal Reasons" is mainly code for "None of your Business"

As memory serves, the guys who quit or took early retirement, did so because of the childish behavior of their supervisors and/or coworkers. By childish, I really mean something else.

So I should not say I am going to work for US government to support iran nuclear deal but rather family issues. ( insert Kamala Harris cackle)

You don't have to give any particular reason. Like with any job anywhere in which you hand in notice, just say it's for personal reasons, no need to elaborate!

Its the result of being unable to accept criticism and judgement. The inability to understand that other people can have an opinion that differs from their own..

For some Saudi is a paradise - for most other sane/balanced/educated/well-travelled people it is a socially backwards country whoms only reason for its presence at the worlds table is the money it pumps out of the ground..

It is not clear what “Family Reasons” means within the context of this Company. Is it the intent of this post to say that some of the expats have older brothers and sisters that are actually Daddy and Mommy?

Well, family reason is not an excuse, if your children are having bad time at their school, daughters unhappy and in some cases harrased, not opportunities for those with sports talent and your wife had enough of the limited living experience, that's it.

I can concede that some expats might not be the most productive after a few years at Aramco, but oh my…some Saudi Aramcoans have turned slacking into an art form! They simply cannot be beat!

Any claims of retribution are from those unproductive expats that were fired for cause or laid off because the Company just couldn’t afford them.

These unproductive slackers were very unprofessional when they were hired and left on bad terms.

There is no retribution for those expats that were retiring or simply wanted to leave.

I went with “I just don’t want to work here anymore.” Worked fine. They didn’t really ask too much, people quit all the time.

I know of no Aramco retreads in the last several years. One guy tried to come back, but what they offered him was WAY less than he got before. That said, if you are leaving, no point in telling the truth. Nothing good will come from it, and it might actually hurt the expats who are still there. Any manager worth his/her salt know why you are going, and it's not above a bad manager to get rid of everyone who hung around the "troublemaker". It all depends on who is in charge and how paranoid or angry they got from the parting comments.

From what I was told this is a cultural thing having to do with no criticizing bosses, company, country, culture. That way you make sure you will be taken back in case you decide to return here.

Very sage advice @ihu+1fxnCIKM. I think that maybe you are an Aramco veteran.

Under the thin varnish of HR Manuals and SAP stipulated supervisor meetings, you are essentially dealing with a Mob syndicate formed by various Saudi families. The locals won't talk about it, but they know very well not to cross certain people. As far as I know, nobody has been whacked, but it's not an accident that expats from certain countries do better politically at Aramco than others. Telling the truth when you leave won't change anything, so why deal these people on your way out? Just smile, keep your mouth shut and take the money. It's not your problem.

If you are close to retirement (w/in 5 yrs) you need to forget about GC promotions.
And here is a good one...though actually written into the docs....
if you work all year and retire at the very end of the year due to your birthday say falling EO Sept, Oct, Nov or Dec...you will not get any prorated SAIP. You have to work at least one day in the new year in which the bonus is actually paid. The 'birthday penalty'.

The Company does not provide negative or positive recommendations for departing employees. There is no retribution. They may treat you a little rough during your last year prior to retirement, but this only happens when an employee doesn’t really mind and knows their services are no longer required. I liked it there, but was happy to finally relax at home.

They cn make your life miserable for the remaining 60 days, they can give really ugly references to your future employers, they can even 'create' evidence to wipe your severance... Etc...etc. Gangsters
