Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

Last week for many - learnings

My understanding is it’s the last week/s for many, especially in Technology in the UK.

Words of wisdom from someone who has already left:

1) Use GivingForce and utilise your annual donation amount to your local charity/school etc. Apply using volunteer hours and make sure you use those $$ up.

2) Use energise points!! As long as you have a good relationship with your line manager (lots of which are also impacted), they will approve anything. So talk to your friends in the company, especially those who are also leaving and make sure you send the Sapphire and Platinum awards to each other. If you were smart, you would have been doing this since you were made aware of your situation, but it’s still not too late. Also send one for your line manager if you like them, or have been supported.

3) Use LHH - I found them good for CV review. Better some help than nothing.

4) Any employee match shares will vest ~1 month after you leave. Probably best to keep a little while longer though as it wouldn’t surprise me to see a short term gain in share price before all the job cuts really starts to impact in the next 1.5 years.

5) There is life after BP. BP is a big corporate, and despite the market, are likely to have solid enterprise experience which believe it or not, is quite hard to find sometimes. Take a break, and get back into it when needed. For all its failings and leadership issues, a lot of good work is done by many, and you’d be surprised by just how much you have managed to accomplish despite the internal struggles.

@ef Only £1,000 ‘retraining budget’ in the UK. Not sure what they think anyone can retrain as for a grand.

@hz they've been doing this for years in the UK. Stealing from the company and giving eachother energizes back and forth ripping the rug out from under their own feet. they deserve this layoff if they've been doing this. absolutely unethical and disgusting to misuse this system of reward. I haven't seen such a thing in the US. Typical europeans, constantly crying and cribbing about pay when they have phenomenal benefits.

Realize that the job market in upstream is very, very difficult and there are literally hundreds of very qualified professionals out there…understanding and accepting the fact that it may take more than 6 months to even have an interview is a challenging situation. Your present employer will probably never hire you back unless in a contract form then it’s difficult as HR has non written NRB for layed off employees…contract firm recruiters will share what this means…
Be aware that large companies are not done with layoffs and they have become almost procedural…the economy is also in a stressed situation so expect 2026 to fell more employees…this time is so different then 2014, 2020….

Don’t forget to use the $5000 education benefits for US severed employees. I enrolled for courses at top universities in their online education program.

Great advice. Well said and balanced. What can workers and soon to be new employees/challengers learn from the consistent and perpetual corporate market cycle? Or will we forget this in 6 months? This time is different..geopolitical, cultural, economic, any bets on how hard this one gets?
