Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

E is for Expat

Anyone ever gotten more than this rating? Given I run the show and do everything in this dept, it’s a kick in the teeth.

My boss told me in as many words, that it won’t ever go higher as others in the dept (Saudis) take precedence as they are “underpaid” apparently. At least he was honest about it and I know where I stand!

I won’t bother putting in effort beyond the absolute bare minimum now, the last year has been a total waste of my efforts.

SAIP isn’t worth writing home about, it’s 15% or thereabouts. It’s not a large bonus even without tax. I’ve made double and treble that in real bonuses in places. It is almost certainly guaranteed though so good for those that want to do the minimum.

The difference between E and E+ is a few grand. The bigger one is you cannot go up more than one rating in a year so even if you work your bu-t off and over perform, you’ll only ever move up one on the “performance” scale. It’s all rather pointless.

How does E or E+ impact your SAIP? Just curious. I had an offer last year that I declined - I’ve read too much on this forum. One of the things I was worried is that whatever SAIP is listed, I will not get in in full, because my rankings will not be high enough - reserved for Saudis.

'Expats do get more than E. sometimes.'...Anomalous

E or E+ and you are a valued employee.

Expats do get more than E. sometimes. it’s a bell curve so less and less as u move up the curve. Having said that it is fairly common for the precious S ratings to be saved for the local golden boy or girl for rapid promotion. The merit system at Aramco is same as everywhere. Forced ranking. As others said, don’t ki-l yourself, but still do a good job. Collect your pay check, SAIP, etc. enjoy being home at 16:10. Play tennis or golf or whatever. Enjoy a nice cool beverage at 19th hole or third set! Travel too of course. I know you are frustrated as you seem to have really done a lot. Hang in there and enjoy the life.

S is for Saudi.
If you are an expat and get an E you will be fine.
E+ and you are golden.

Some great advice here. Never go beyond the job and work to rule whilst appearing to be cheerful.

Clearly this place has some serious structural and cultural issues that you’re never going to change.

As one poster said, there are no shortage of options in the region at present, Aramco will haemorrhage staff post March (not that anyone in management actually cares).

At least your manager didn't do what they are teaching at the RT "leadership" center. When an employee complains about a low rating, he is supposed to be told that he needs to go above and beyond to stand out. Then, the manager is supposed to give that employee more work.

I will warn you not to suddenly check out. You are likely to get downsized even if you are still doing more than everybody else. Instead, gradually pull back, but make sure to be cheerful and friendly. Take longer and longer to get things done but don't be obvious about it.

As much as you might not like your situation, you want to be the one that says goodbye. FWIW, Your manager actually sounds like one of the better ones.

PMP rating really depend on your supervisor and how you’re perceived by the division head and manager. It can be frustrating to receive a lower rating after going above and beyond what is required or expected for the job. An HR friend told me once annual reviews have nothing to do with advancing or rewording an employee. The PMP is a legal document that will be used justify an employees separation from the company. In the end, PMP ratings are a tool for HR and Management used to justify the next big layoff. PMP has never been about objectively evaluating your work or contributions as the basis for promotion or salary raise. When it comes down, it’s all just an excel spreadsheet sort of low PMP performers and high cost expats that will be on the chopping block for layoffs.

Nothing new here. 'Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.'

Given the number of expats and locals that are leaving for vastly better packages elsewhere, it is a little surprising that the ratings weren’t better this year.
There will a lot of people leaving once the SAIP has been paid.

Welcome to Aramco. Pass Go and collect your $200. If you expected fairness you're in the wrong company.
If you want to make bank and bump up your nest egg, then just do what's expected
