Severance and a new job

What if we are able to find work before the time covered by the severance package expires? Is there any way for UHG to find out and can we lose our severance on account of that?

Also, what's the situation with unemployment? Are we eligible to collect it if we have already received severance or not?

@tqm+13rNi9Ey Thank you. I easily applied for 300+ jobs (internal and external). I’m still turning down job offers.

@qej+13rNi9Ey I distinctly remember them saying something about an additional 14-15 day waiting period for folks over 40. I’m just shy of that so that’s the only thing I can think of.

@hkh - how did you get your severance so fast? I submitted the severance agreement on the first day I could and I didn't get mine until 3 weeks after that.

I was laid off 1/2. Started a new gig the following Monday. Received my last check and severance 1/10. Hated the new gig, interviewed and was rehired by UHG (interview process started prior to leaving company). I didn’t have to repay my severance

Your severance is yours once you receive it. This is what I was told by HR Direct when I asked about it. I would call and speak with them if you have specific questions.

  • If you are hired by United before the end of your termination date (2/20 or earlier), you don't get the severance because you are still technically an employee until that date.
  • If you are hired by United after your termination date (2/20 or later), you get all of your severance.
  • If you are hired by United as a third party contractor at any time before or after your termination date, you get all of your severance.

Apply for unemployment with your state as soon as possible. They can give you the most accurate information on when you can start getting unemployment.

I went through a layoff several years back. The deAl at that point was you got a severence which only had to be paid back if you were rehired by UHC within the period of time covered by the severance. And then you only paid back the overlapping time, not the entire severance. The package given should clearly lay that out. It could have changed since my layoff which was about almost 6 years ago. I was rehired into a different position but didn't start until after the period of time the severance covered and paid nothing back.

Your unemployment insurance benefit will be active after your severance period ends.

Ny has a lovely loophole- it asks if your severance is paid within 30 days.. so use that to your advantage, I am!

Your severance is yours. You can even get rehired by United during the severance period and still keep it.

Severance is yours even if you start a new job the next day, unemployment depends on the state, in New York you cannot collect until your severance period is over.

Unemployment rules vary by state. A lot of states won't issue unemployment until the X amount of weeks your severance is for. But it is recommended you fill out the unemployment paperwork to get started so it's ready for if you qualify at some point. Also, I've heard the severance doesn't get paid until a cycle or two after your last pay check so keep that in mind
