Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Leave of absence

How do you request leave of absence? What’s the criteria for it? Does it protect you from getting NSI if you are on leave of absence?

I was with Denbury. Had a project that (if XOM decided to continue with) they'd want/need my experience, and I wanted to help out, if needed. But they couldn't/wouldn't give me a yes/no answer as to whether they were gonna go on with the project, so I suggested a leave of absence until they made a decision one way or the other. Win/win, or so I thought. They thought I was just trying to extend my time before retiring. So, reading the tea leaves, I resigned and retired. Sure enough, they didn't go on with the project. Would've been far easier just to tell me they had no plans to do it.

@he forcing you to voluntary resign without recourse is a very harsh term. Which country was this? Canada? Or other countries in Asia?

@OP wont recommend this approach .Every person I saw went on medical leave they were kicked out. Only once we had this Indian lady went on maternity leave and our manager was so protective of her, advocating for her....

it does protect you from gettng NSI if you worked less than 183 days in the assessment year.

however in my country (not the US obviously) we also sign a form to say there is no guarantee of reinstatement of employment after the sabbatical. and if there's no suitable position after the sabbatical period, we agree to vountarily resign, with no notice period or redundancy pay and benefits.

i took sabbatical after good performing year and went back to my job when the previous bosses still have some good impression of my work, and there were not these massive layoffs. in current times I believe it's an easy way out for the company to get rid of you, so would not suggest this to anyone.

Does LOA need to be approved by your supervisor? If yes, they probably won’t do it in case you are potential target for the PIP so you may not qualify.

If you are away for 50% or more of an assessment period — due to LOA or similar circumstances — you will not be assessed for that year.

it used to be if you were there for less than half of the assessment period you did not get assessed...I would not be surprised if they took that away in the last few years.
