Is Trouble Brewing for 3M Investors?
By Lee Samaha – Aug 26, 2023 at 5:07AM
KEY POINTS

Weakness in China and key industry end markets is putting 3M's guidance under pressure.

Management has a poor track record of meeting guidance.

The company needs to demonstrate underlying margin expansion to convince investors its restructuring is on track.

Not only the share price is sinking, Your AIP projections are also tanking. Check 3M GO and see... most BG are below 80% payout, with Health care being the lowest in Q2 !!

Stock struggling to keep above $100 despite announcing a new CEO who is more credible... investor shows no confidence for either RemainCo or SpinCo

Making Sense,

I agree the day to day fluctuations in 3M's stock price are not significant. However...

The only way PFAS litigation is getting settled 'soon' is 3M's bankruptcy and even that might not do it. That litigation is going to go on for another decade.

CAE probably will get (mostly) settled in the next year or two, I'd agree with that.

Yes, the sky is falling. I suggest taking various estimates for PFAS and CAE off 3M's balance sheet post-spin and re-calculate the viability of RemainCo. You won't like the answer that arrives. My numbers are around $5B, maybe a bit less, for CAE and $20B+ for PFAS (3M has already agreed to $10B in the US alone).

After the Titanic hit an iceberg and began to sink, Hartley and his fellow band members assembled in the first class lounge and started playing music to help keep the passengers calm. They later moved to the forward half of the boat deck, where they continued to play as the crew loaded the lifeboats. Many of the survivors said that the band continued to play until the very end.

Overall market is down, plus ex-dividend date means stock automatically drops $1.50. Treasure yields are now crazy high which impacts 3M allure. As interest rates drop in 2024, you will see share price increase quickly. Resolution tp the PWS/PFAS and CAEv2 litigation will also propel share price. This company isn't going bankrupt any time soon. The sky is not falling.

$98 hanging by a thread. Could 3M stock price hit $97 on the big announcement day?

Liability of 3M's two cases (PFAS and military ear plugs) is estimated to be $500 billion. Even if 3M negotiates 10 cents on the dollar, this is a Chapter 11. Like GE, the slide down will be long and painful. 4 weeks ago, articles began appearing that 3M stock was "uninvestable".

(Bloomberg) -- 3M Co. has so many big problems on its hands that one veteran Wall Street analyst likened the conglomerate’s challenges to the Titanic — just after the iceberg.

“We’re talking more about rearranging the deckchairs when you’ve got these big calamities bearing down on the company,” said Deane Dray, an RBC Capital Markets analyst who has covered 3M for nearly 20 years.

“The stock is uninvestible given the current circumstances,” said Dray, who has the equivalent of a sell rating on the company."
