CAP

Has anyone ever been on an CAP? Does that mean termination is pretty much in the works?

@129 Sam thing appened to someone else as well they just wanted this individual out and they were doing a good job the negative was completely made up. This individual was young didnt know what to do and was finally shown the door. Even Unemployment sided with the individual when they applied so they were able to receive benefits. This individual was white so I dont think race makes a difference. When they are out to get you it's hard. Glad you got out.

@j7 I had this happen to me last year. I was threatened with a CAP after 6 weeks in a new role. Was told that I wasn’t “a good fit” and either had the options to ask for my old job back, find a new one, or stay and try to fight the CAP. I have zero negative items on my record. My previous reviews from managers praise me as an employee and my work.

It was very obvious they wanted me out so I applied and interviewed like crazy for internal and external roles and eventually transferred out. Had to take a demotion and 10k pay cut because of it. Later found out my replacement was an old colleague from my managers previous place of employment. Pretty fishy but I was a younger minority up against a group of older and white coworkers. I wasn’t going to win.

No cap is needed to shackle an employee in place. They just dont release you from current position if you found another internal that you want. Nothing you can do about it unless the management of the org you are going to has more political clout and can tell your management to sit right down and release them

Sups putting high performers on CAPs is a big problem. I had a sup that did this constantly. It’s to keep you where you are. They don’t want good workers taking their talent to a different team that’s not their own.

The sups at uhc are as slow as they come better appeal that cap you got 15 days from the day you sign ! Have your facts ready and you’ll win every time

@j7 I agree it more than likely your boss with the problem. I once saw a newby supervisor place an employee on CAP that had only been in the dept a few monthes. They had come from a another dept and had done great but get to her and all downhill. This sup was horrible as well and barely knew the job herself. This employee ended up being let go as the supervisor was moving it along as quickly as she could to get rid of them.
I would love to call her out here. My advice is to contact HR and start your own case so the documentation is there. All worked out for the employee in the end though they got a better job elsewhere and is doing great.

@ha No, sups do not get your bonus if you miss it. At least not in my department.

I have had many people come off a CAP and get a high MAP rating the next year. It’s very possible.

@a8 exactly… if you’re on a CAP and have a history of great performance your boss is the problem. Those bosses that do this are typically short lived and inexperienced. One of the reasons SVP in ESRO got cut is he was bleeding talent!!

I have heard that your sup gets to keep your bonus if you don’t meet the bonus requirements or if you’re on a CAP. Does anyone know if this is true or not? I don’t imagine it’s true but have heard it from multiple people and some of them were sups.

Maybe not the initial CAP, but if you do everything to meet the requirements, including having regular check-ins with the manager and documenting and emailing your shared understanding of the requirements, and you fulfill those requirements, and then they move the goalpost and elevate the CAP, immediately pivot to a job search because there is nothing you can do to succeed. HR and Legal will take the manager’s bullsh-t fairy tale moved goalpost and hold it against YOU. Don’t know how these slobs sleep at night. Probably in a gold bed bought with the bonus and salary they stole from you…

@a8 So they put you on a CAP without a MAP rating of 2? Or they gave you a 2 after years of 3s and 4s? Was it outside of the performance review schedule and did something trigger it?

Everytime i tried to get out of my unit, they found something to put me on a cap. i would suggest that you right down everything and don't talk to upper management cause its them

I was placed on a CAP after years of consistent 4s and a few 3s on my reviews. Its all a favoritism game. Senior management forces direct management to pick some people to give 2s to even if they don't deserve it. I wasn't one of the favorites so I got picked for a 2 then placed on CAP. They made my life miserable after and laid me off.

@OP It was an incredibly long time ago so things may have changed, but I survived a performance CAP. Mine was so bad that if I had failed one more month they would have started termination discussions. I managed to bounce back and pass subsequent months, eventually pulling me off the CAP. I also know my supervisor at the time didn’t want to lose me so she did everything she could to help me get off of it, including extra training, reducing my VPH so I could slow down, etc. I was in a production area at the time so being on CAP su-ked and affected everything - I couldn’t apply out thanks to being on CAP but I was miserable. Anyways, long story short - as someone who experienced being on a CAP - it doesn’t always mean a termination.
