Next Round of Sears & Kmart Closures

So with the Kmart in Minneapolis, Minnesota Closing does anyone know about any more closures at the moment? The only reason I am asking is typically when they announce one closure many other are to follow with in the next few days

Yes, I didn't mention Aurora and Brownsville because the earlier commenter already did.

@7tzd+13QyIJQP Are those the only remaining errors at this point? I also see Brownsville and Aurora on there. Aren't they closing? He did add in White Plains Sears to his map so apparently he reads this site and saw his error LOL!

That map is also missing the Sears in Miami-Coral Gables, Florida, and the Sears in Naranjito, Puerto Rico. To my knowledge, these are still open.

The map still shows Lake Grove, NY, and Falls Church, VA which are both liquidating.

Hey "Nonymous" dude, few random observations. I have noticed, that (at least as of Mon.), all the US based Kmarts that share a town with a Sears have zero jobs listed on the jobs website. That means our theory of those stores closing may just be beginning to bear fruit, and come to fruition. I am cautiously optimistic, but I think White Plains, Key West, Miami, Silver Spring, & Long Beach Kmarts might hopefully kick the bucket soon! Well, actually Long Beach CA & Key West Fl, Kmart now have Part-Time jobs only, but that could still indicate a potential closing.

Also, I was also observing in detail, Anonymous map guy's map here:

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1p1KF8SWbdXxLBnqFrGe21e_VlcdCVdQU&ll=41.844579109537065%2C-139.97478575000002&z=3

I noticed he has made some changes for example he now includes White Plains, Key West, Sears. However, I have not seen Pharr TX, Fort Collins CO, Thornton CO (Grand), Anchorage AK (Home & Life), Overland Park KS (Home & Life). Nor have I seen Brownsville TX, Aurora CO be removed yet. Just thought I'd run that map by you since you seem to be the expert on all things, Sears-locations, related, while List Man Jack seems to be the expert on all things Kmart-related. I noticed that on this map, the Anonymous Map Guy, already removed MN Kmart, but on List man's map, it is still there. I read another post by Listman, that he is awaiting the City Council vote on May 13, to make it official. Hopefully that's just a formality as I am looking forward to the Nicollet Ave. intersection finally opening up. Just a few random observations. Take care!

Consider that the company might not be sending 53-foot trailers full of merchandise to those far-flung locations anymore, especially if merchandise is not selling through quickly. Small UPS shipments of product they really need is probably sufficient. Maybe someone from one of those far-flung locations can comment on this.

@4ygj+13QyIJQP Oh, my bad, yes, 1500 miles (750 each way, I read the wrong page). OK, so 750 miles one way. Also, neither of those stores is near any distribution center I Know of. In any case, it is still inefficient for a company to ship to far-flung, random locations, if there aren't any other locations nearby. One way or the other they have to still Pay a truck driver to drive whatever amount of miles. It simply isn't efficient and I predict both of those locations I mentioned will be closed soon. Yes, WM ships to those locations but they also have about a gazillion stores so there are always multiple stops nearby, etc.. Economies of scale come into place with such few locations.

@4hfq+13QyIJQP. A round trip between Minot and Hamilton is about 1500 miles which means nothing. Sears is only paying one-way which would be approximately $1400.00 using the current cost of $1.82/mile and take a driver about 12 hours. It’s up to carrier to secure a back haul. The shipping cost is passed on to the consumer, it’s not as expensive For Sears as you make it out to be.

My bad, in the below post, I meant SE, not SW, corners of Florida. I was referring to the stores in Marathon, Miami, Key West & Largo. All in the SE of the state.

@4hmh+13QyIJQP While those are certainly factors, shipping logistics/distances are factors as well. It isn't a coincidence that the only Kmarts in Florida are in the SW corner of the state, for example. It is simply inefficient to ship trucks to stores that are, yes, far-flung, and not close to any other store. There are Costs, involved, with sending trucks to Hamilton MT, for example, when there isn't another store within about 1000 miles of there. The trucks don't run for free. Someone has to Pay for the diesel in the truck, & Salary for the driver. The simple fact is, whether one wants to deny it or not, is that a round trip truck drive, from Hamilton MT to Minot ND is 1800 miles. Unless they can ship stuff through mental telepathy or something, the shipping logistics factor remains in place. It's not the only factor, but it IS 1 factor.

Lease, lease options, owned property and/or store profitability determines whether it will close or not. Not distance or distance to other sears or Kmart stores.

@4fhf+13QyIJQP It doesn't work that way. Freedom of Speech, first Amendment and all. People can write far-flung, boom, all they want. Far-flung, far-flung. Those stores are far-flung, and because they are far-flung, they deserve to close for being far-flung. Eat my far-flung shorts. Far-flung. I will continue to make predictions on when stores are closing, though I will never announce it as official until I have proof. So far-flung, far-flung, far-flung, pal. Stay angry.

In addition to the "boom" guy and the one demanding links (probably one in the same), I'm getting sick of the "far flung" guy. Enough with that phrase, please. Find a new term if you feel compelled to make predictions on this insanely unpredictable company.

@3mlq+13QyIJQP Yes, and I think 1 of them will close. Check the jobs website. Only the Bruckner Blvd. Bronx location has ANY jobs listed. The other literally has zero (or at least it did, when I saw it Last Night).

@3ckb+13QyIJQP Of course distance is a factor. Why do you think TX, NM, NV, CO, WA, OR, SD, NE, KS, etc. lost their Kmarts? Because they were so far flung that made shipping to them inefficient. Now you have ND and MT Kmarts, 900 miles apart. That's an 1800 mile round trip for a truck driver. Obviously that's a factor. It wasn't a factor when they had 2500 locations all over the country. It IS a factor when they barely have 30 or 40. Also, stores in close proximity ARE likely to close. Bergen County NJ, for example, had 5 at 1 point, now only 1. If stores (like Kearney/Belleville NJ) are practically walkable to each other, they are basically taking business from each other. They can reduce overheads by combining operations into 1 building. And it will happen soon.

@3mql+13QyIJQP Forgot to mention the Bronx, They got two kmart locations between walking distance there.

Stores adjacent or not close geographically to each other have zero bearing on whether the store stays open or not You’d be foolish to think that someone is actually making a decision based on location to another nearby store or not.

Yawn. None of this might, could, possibly analysis matters. They will go once a deal for the property is made or they sell the stock they have on hand, which is selling quite slowly.

@2lwk+13QyIJQP Minot hasn't officially been announced yet, but I think it soon will be, along with Hamilton MT, Marshall MI, Hyannis MA, & Lebanon NH Kmarts. Probably the 2 Maryland stores as well. These are what I call "outpost stores", because they exist in isolated outposts in (mostly) small states, or small towns in larger states. They are too far-flung, and isolated from other locations, making shipping to these stores, Cost-prohibitive. Especially in the case of Hamilton MT, and Minot ND, both are in small states, and they are both the nearest store to each other. The distance between them is 900 miles! There is no way they can be shipped to, efficiently, when they are 900 miles from the nearest location. A smaller scale example of an outpost store is the Kmart in Bridgehampton NY, which is way out on the eastern end of Long Island, so keep your eye on that too.
Others, that I would look at being nixed soon, are pretty much all of them, LOL, but specifically, as someone else mentioned, the towns that have both a Sears AND a Kmart, often within walking distance to each other. I believe Key West, Miami, Long Beach, White Plains, and somewhere in MD are the only remaining ones on the mainland like that. So look for those to be eliminated as well. They can easily combine those into 1, and carry both product lines in 1 building, eliminating the overhead of 2 buildings less than a mile from each other.
Other examples of stores that might go soon, might be Kearny or Belleville NJ Kmarts. They are 2 miles away from each other, so they are probably just drawing business away from each other. So 1 of them will go soon, probably Kearny, as it has zero jobs listed as of now (not that that's always an accurate indication). Long Beach and Costa Mesa CA are pretty close too, but not as close together as Kearny/Bellville. Another example of this was the Wilkes Barre/Kingston PA Kmarts, of which they eliminated the former, because they were very close together and were thus overlapping markets. So keep your eyes on those I mentioned, surely there will be others eliminated soon, too, as I think they are about all toast, by 2020.

@nyb+13QyIJQP I'm a little late but wasn't there something about the Kmart in Minot, North Dakota and the lease there? I wonder if that one might be closing soon too, even if it's not part of a round of closures at all.

I would say 125 full-line stores, because the three Sears Home & Life and the four Sears Appliance & Mattress stores are not full-line.

Such wordy replies.....kindly limit responses to several lines, as we busy top of the line executives do not have the pleasure of time to review such lenghthy banter. Also please stick to the subject at hand - we must be informed as to upcoming store closures - their number and locations.

Boom guy (whoever he is, remains correct). The only place he is living Rent-free, is y'alls heads. Keep crying about an obsolete company, with, like, 30-40 stores, left. They'll be gone in Several Months anyway. You are all welcome to keep crying and stay mad though, LOL!
This site is for us closing enthusiasts to cheerlead the closures of these companies. And we will keep doing it until they are all gone. And nobody can stop us. First Amendment and all. You are welcome to stay mad though. No law against that.

This is just speculation, but I'd look at stores where the landlord has a redevelopment plan ready to go (Sears in Fort Lauderdale FL, Kmart in Hyannis MA), and places where Sears and Kmart are a short distance from each other (Long Beach CA, Key West FL, White Plains NY)
