Thread regarding Optum layoffs

How to get promoted at this company

I have over 8 years experience in clinical administration I’m a 22 pay grade and have been to the career advancement meetings they use to have that gave 4 sessions and talked about networking updating your resume and all these little tips and tricks to get promoted. I even had someone from the talent team look over my resume and make suggestions, which while I appreciated didn’t help I was at least getting interviews with my
Old resume and with the suggestions from the talent team I wasn’t even getting offers to do a video interview. So I paid someone from outside the company to tweak it and while I have better success and the interviews seem to go well I always get a email a month later saying the position is no longer available or they went with another person better suited. I have took up every offer to cross train in other departments when they need help. Have shadowed all my L3s and L3s on other teams and have networked with the supervisors and managers for my department and outside. My current manager sends me every job opening posted for a higher position and tells the hiring manager to get with me which they do so I’m not sure why I haven’t been promoted yet. It’s either because I don’t have a degree which isn’t even a requirement for any of the jobs I apply for they just want a GED or HS diploma or because I have medical accommodations, which doesn’t effect my job performance I just may need to take half a day off due to pain and inflammation but never has it effected my productivity and I do try to get the bulk of my work done early in case I need to leave no one is burden by picking up my work. I think I’ve only had one person cover me for a day or two while I was gone but it was light work and only about 3 hours of work. I remain friendly but not invasive with co workers so I don’t think my attitude is an issue. I assist when asked and offer help when needed but don’t push it and participate in meetings. Has anyone in a lower level actually got red promoted or it is just impossible? Seriously looking into other companies.

Seriously it’s not rocket science to get promoted in this company. It’s super duper easy. 1. Be willing to be morally corrupting. 2. When you see something DONT say something. 3. Be se-----y promiscuous if you are a female. 4. Threaten people and be underhanded and deceitful. 5. Be willing and able to do WHATEVER it takes to hit your metrics— especially if it’s illegal and against ALL policies and local laws. 6. Lie, cheat, steal if needed. Don’t ever share how you do what you do— just wink, smile, and nod in agreement when you lie to you manager as you both know what the truth is but you can’t actually discuss all the illegal sh-t you have to do. This gives them plausible deniability. 7. Be nasty and mean spirited (somehow this is viewed as a go-getter mentality). What am I forgetting? I feel like I’m missing something lol.

You could move to the Philippines and get hired on the spot. Google Optum global or look them up on Facebook. That’s is where they are hiring.

First, master the ancient art of being seen but never heard. Then, perfect your coffee-fetching skills because nothing screams leadership potential like a flawless latte delivery. Finally, ensure your laugh is perfectly synced to the boss’s jokes, no matter how soul-crushingly unfunny they are. Bonus points if you can pretend incompetence is a sign of “thinking outside the box.”. That’s how it’s ran in IT, same as any other department here.

It is a popularity contest. Your fate is decided on day 1 and set in stone. There is no way to change your fate once the sorting step has been completed. If in the good sort opportunities will find you and if the other outcome nothing ever happens as hard as you try. Only option is to leave the company and try somewhere else.

“”I applied for a promotion here, I interviewed for 3 positions out of the 5 I applied for, and got TWO offers the same day. If you aren't being selected for interviews, most likely you aren't meeting requirements or your resume needs an upgrade!“”

If the talent team people themselves helped them tweak their resume wouldn’t that make the whole department useless if it’s not even good enough to get a interview at the same company they work for? And I don’t buy the unlikeable post I have Interviewed absolute trash employees and they still get hired even if I don’t select them because it’s about three people who decide if you get hired unless you’re willing to take a pay cut, or stay at the same spay but do a lot more work. Also don’t believe the person who said they got two offers that day as we need to interview everyone until the closing window and talk with other people on the department or team before making an offer and get with HR to see if it’s still in the budget to hire but honestly 80% of the jobs posted are ghost jobs for this company

I have over 10 years in my position and am considered a SME. I also have been nominated and selected an Optum SuperHero. With that said, I have applied to over 50 other positions in the last 12 months that I am interested in and qualified for, but I haven't even been able to get to an interview stage. I've talked to others in the company and they have the same exact experience. I think its way more difficult to land another job internally than even as an external applicant. What i gather is that hiring managers place the job on the board to legally say they have, but they hire within their department. Its extremely frustrating. Don't stop trying though!

It’s not uncommon to have difficulty getting a different job within the company. One person posted that she applied for more than 200 jobs at the company before she was selected for her transfer.

Thank you that makes me feel a little better I will ask my manager for a mock interview after the holidays and see where I can improve but I may just use that advice to look elsewhere aswell.

I would continue to work on improving your interviewing skills, but before you start feeling something is completely wrong with you, stop. A lot of promotions there are done by being friends with someone and not about being qualified. I’d take this as an opportunity to continue your professional development but I’d also start looking for positions outside this company.

It maybe how you interview. You should practice with your manager and aim for pg 23 or 24 positions. Then move up 1 to 2 paygrades from there.
