Thread regarding VMware layoffs

I’m curious to hear people’s thoughts of how this will game out if this deal craters, which I think it will.

Will our SLT implement BCOM’s draconian organizational plan, or will they all hold onto their jobs and manage through to some lesser equivalent of the status quo, ie: centralized teams and functions, multiple BU GM’s, geo based sales and delivery? I’m curious, because we obviously cannot continue with 37k employees. We have been exposed for our inefficiencies and lack of financial performance. MD and SLake will want their pound of flesh sometime soon. No 3rd party will again offer such a rich tender offer, but to get back to something north of $100/share, I’m assuming drastic changes are coming. Would love to hear what others have to say.

if deal falls through then big layoffs in Jan 2024. However, not as big as BC was planning. HR, Accounting, Sales, Legal, Marketing, IT, Ops - many there will be the winners as the layoffs will be much less in those areas - BC was pretty much going to entirely can those areas.

The GOOD NEWS: management won't be getting fat payouts. Many may even get fired. Who does not believe this is better than the deal going through? Truly? These are awful people. Let them lose.

OP here. Thanks for all great input and comments, and with not much hyperbole. “ this exercise has exposed the cracks”. That has stuck with me because I feel that way as well. As a people leader (who did not receive an offer) I am struggling with how we motivate our people to perform, when I expect an extreme emotional and motivational downdraft. I will be one of many zombie employees who did not receive an offer but will have to suit up and continue to run the business. That’s what I get paid to do, and I will put on my game face, but its going to be hard and even harder for our IC’s who don’t see a future in a stand-alone Vmware. Too much damage done I’m afraid.

If the deal fails then there is going to be very disgruntled workforce that has lost confidence in the leadership. Specially in Ops. So many people were given transition offers when they are clearly useless in transition work. All because of groupism and favoritism. Now imagine all those who did not get offers has to work with this leadership that clearly showed they are biased and it is going to be very difficult. This whole exercise exposed all the cracks. I feel like I don’t belong here anymore. Lot of folks will feel same. It also exposed the bloat we have. There will need to be new leadership that has to remove the rot. And I feel I need to continue looking for the job and take the best offer even if I don’t get my retention RSUs. It’s going to be very odd going back to regular work.

If the deal collapses then so does the stock and there will also be a mass exodus of disenchanted employees.
The market will be looking for a clear statement on how VMW will aim to recover. To have any credibility that vision will have to come from a new leadership team. To put together a new SLT then presumably MD and SLake will have to intervene - and quickly.
Unless of course the current SLT have already prepared a cunning plan B ...🤣

Is there any hope remaining China will approve the deal?

We will develop a multicloud, kubernetes app for Private AI that runs on AWS native. Everyone will install the Horizon client to access it behind their SDWAN router with secure open policiy automation in an intelligent graph hub.

Management will tear each other apart because those who were given transition will go up against those who put their names forward. That will be a fun blood bad resulting in a management exedus in January covered up as the January annual cull. The remaining staff will cover their own arses by cutting cists by cutting some of us but nowhere near BC standards.

Good post, and I’ve been wondering the same. I believe that it definitely won’t be business as usual, and that the general framework, GTM plan and staffing model that VMW management/Broadcom had come up with will be implemented. I believe that those that got offers will be retained by VMW, those that got transition offers may be retained or transitioned, and those that were not getting letters will be let go, with a VMW severance.

So regardless of the deal closing or falling through, drastic changes are coming. Winter is coming…
