Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Sure hope leadership remembers what the employees have done for them.

I have heard rumors that there will be a 'Work Will Set You Free' sign placed above the beer taps in the company collaborative space.

@gew+17YzNhSu. COVID is the perfect excuse to completely decimate or "retool" the sales force.

Several months ago, someone on here was aghast that I said that publishing reps would be looked at as "superspreaders," (their words, not mine, ) due to the fact that one rep could possiby spread the virus across multiple schools and that rep selling practices would be altered forever. .

Well, guess what. The days of just showing up and wandering through a department are done. Schools know this and so does MH and crew.

At this point, the only relatively secure sales job at CL is an inside sales rep.

The business simply will not support, nor does it need massive sales forces to peddle product.

Sales is where the cuts will be. And they will be deep.

Things to consider if you’re still there:

  1. Your employment is TRANSACTIONAL. The company is paying you for your services. The second the company thinks the transactional nature of your employment is no longer beneficial you will be let go. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
  1. If you are a long timer then your job is at higher risk because your salary is likely higher than your peers. They do make this calculation and I have seen peers red-lined out, meaning someone looks at salaries high to low and makes cuts. This practice unfortunately affects older employees but they will do everything in their power to have a reason other than salary for letting you go. You have legal options however to get your severance you have to sign a waiver that they didn’t do anything wrong. The waiver does not clear them from actual age discrimination or any other protected employment but that would be a long shot to fight.
  1. If you are let go with severance ALWAYS ask for more during the severance call.

@gew+17YzNhSu What was said on the earnings call that you're basing that on?

Listening to the earnings call closely, it’s abundantly and unequivocally clear that the next reorg will be large and before the next earnings call. Bets as to what it’ll look like and when it will take place?

@bxx+17YzNhSu While that's true to an extent, I've worked at several companies large and small in addition to Cengage. I went through good and hard times at all of these companies and Cengage by far treats its employees with the least amount of respect.

When thing are going well, leadership of all companies LOVE their employees! Ping pong tables and free espresso for all. Need your laundry done? Just drop in off and the company will pay for it.

The harsh reality is that it’s all BS. A CEOs job is to return investment. Period. The sooner you understand that, the better off you will be. If you want to work for a company and not the government, then come to terms with this fact and figure out how to survive in the system you have chosen.

How long have you worked at Cengage? Employees have always been treated as the least valuable and most easily disposed asset. That's the culture Michael has built since he came here.

Cengage and Hanson could care less about what employees have contributed to the company. That has been made abundantly and inaquivacably clear.
