Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Never Been

There’s never been a moment when Dell felt this off-course.

Never been a moment when they reached straight into people’s pockets
and acted like it was business as usual.

Never been a moment when they grabbed freedom with one hand
and shrugged with the other.

Never been a moment when trust evaporated this fast, or when the math showed the people always came last
while the profit columns kept climbing.

Never been
and somehow, here we are.

@af almost as if the fortune 500's were in lockstep starting in 2020? If you go all in on some "planned future", and this fails, companies must scramble to remain relevant. Whats realy eye-opening is that most 500's share 2-3 major shareholders :/. Makes you wonder if CEOs are actually calling the shots!

@vx You're absolutely right. It's why Dell continues to fight off SuperMicro even though they don't have the services arm. But, they have the same ability to buy parts that we do, then package them up and try to undercut us at every turn. As a result, our margins are in the mid single-digits on AI servers and we don't have any other multi-billion dollar products to compensate for the thin margins on the AI boxes.

We, if we hadn't sold VMware, would have a division with high margins to help boost the company, but greed took over and we sold the long term revenue for the short term profit gain. This is why cutting expenses is so critical for the ELT. We won't be able to survive on the meager profits from the AI servers, not to mention the thin margins on PCs. We need products with high margins and need customers to buy them!

Some storage has better margins, but you can't force customers to buy it, like having to buy PowerStore if you want DPC. Customers will walk away, especially if they're using other storage or their budgets are tight because money is being dedicated to AI at their company.

Anyone can be an OEM. They don’t really do anything innovative. Just put other people’s parts together.

The sole advantage Dell has is infrastructure and supplier pipelines. Once those fall, the company goes with it.

@af 100% agree on that. Dell is far from "innovative" and in all honesty, ISN'T an innovative company. The only time in the company's history in which it was truly innovative is when MD started the company in college and proved that computers weren't just for the rich or just for the government. He proved that anyone could own a computer and for a fair price while not breaking the bank. After that? Dell has just copied larger and more succesful companies in every possible way. Especially these days...

in 2020 for example.. I'd bet a lot of money that Dell wouldn't have forced everyone remote if other companies weren't doing the same - HP, Lenovo, Amazon, Tesla, etc... - and would have expected folks to come in 3 days/week as normal. But, since the FAANG companies said "go remote" Dell said "me too!"

Then when Tesla said nobody can be remote, Amazon followed suite, as did other companies and Dell again was like "me too!"

Dell in all honesty makes decent computers and fantastic monitors (though, there are far better monitors out there however, Dell does make some pretty solid monitors) but other than that? Dell doesn't create or innovate JS.

I mean heck, dell is way behind in the AI game and is playing catchup at this point and by the time they do, they'll be having to upgrade to newer AI that other companies have been using for the last 5 years lol.

Oh and, dell servers and networking equipment - switches and routers - are DOGwater compared to cisco, HP, Huawai, and Juniper.

Sadly it’s not just Dell. It’s every large corporation. Call me crazy but it all feels very planned starting in 2020. It seems as if we really don’t compete and try to be innovative. We just pivot when everyone else does. Have the same policies as everyone else etc. maybe it’s just me but I feel the customer comes last for everything. Think about your experience at Starbucks it’s now lifeless and overpriced The new car you overpaid for and is complete cr-p. Nothing is quality The Rolex you bought made in china. Maybe I just need to plug back in to actually taste the steak
