Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

I will not quit

It's obvious that the goal of these prolonged layoffs is to create a toxic and stressful work environment that will push as many employees out the door as possible. Well, I have no intention of doing them any favors and quitting. I'll do the bare minimum in this period and wait to see how it plays out. If I still have a job at the end of it, I might change my approach to work.

Procurement announced yesterday (Friday) at the 11th hour that the notifications for US/UK employees that were planned (as per the global town hall the day before) were postponed to “probably” Feb 3…
Highest show of ineptitude… they had over 6 month to plan this, announce notification will happen on Thursday and Friday say they are postponed?
This is beyond pathetic… severance will be great, a job offer will only mean a salary while looking for another job. The bp of old is gone and now people treatment is worse than a sweatshop…

@gc+1jj9rx3me It's the most tone-deaf thing and they do it constantly. I don't think they mean it or they'd explain how it works better.

If you have the energy to do so, please use that benefit. Use it with an external provider and not the phone support or the person in office. In the US at least, you get 6 sessions every 12 months and it resets. You don't have to do it in 6 weeks, you could figure out a pacing that makes sense for you. I really don't think they're banking on anyone using that $600+ value. Don't leave money on the table; make bp pay for your person to vent to.

But wait, we have the EAP program…

So if you are experiencing some fatigue, stress, or anxiety for what is going on, just remember, THEY ARE HERE TO HELP YOU.

That is what I’ve heard in two different meetings this week…

With the creativity of a 2 year old crayons, middle managers have come asking what could be delivered by end of May. Hmmmm. We’ve asked them to go back to upper management and ask why? What’s going to happen then? Meanwhile, we’re going to wait for an answer so we can avoid regret work.

The pending layoffs truly create a toxic work environment. The sad reality is that bp has no consideration for what it does to the staff by constantly rolling out these "reorganizations." They operate on the assumption that you're Pavlov's dog where they crack the whip and you'll go running to them. As for me, each one of these have caused me to confine to myself and I stop collaborating. Certainly, the talks around the office will be about "what rumors" each of us have heard. One year, things go so bad that we went without any kind of performance evaluations (for those who were not fired). They said everyone will get an "averaged" rating. Totally sad. It was their way of saying that you'll accept the outcome because out of their generosity, you're still here.

I am also in your shoes— my exit date light years away. Clearly a cheap move by the company to avoid paying unemployment / severance. I am being given lip service about attempts to keep my role. Fully aware this is just false hope to keep me productive through the remainder of my tenure— caution if they do the same to you. To add insult to injury, they’re actually adding more work to those affected. My advice: give the minimum effort possible and apply apply apply. Even if by some miracle things change, the work environment will be toxic in the aftermath of these layoffs and they’ll likely repeat the exercise next year.

That is an absolutely rational approach...two can play at their game.
