Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Letters on the 26th now

Heard rumblings letters have been delayed until the 26th.

I can see why they might do this.

Offers going on the 16th would be extremely disruptive. Those that didn’t receive them will be in a panic or checked out. The org would be chaos for the 30,40,50,60%+? that don’t receive letters

If instead all comms are delayed until the 26th, there is only 1 day left until EOQ and they will shut off the people who didn’t make it on the 27th at COB latest. Or, maybe as soon as the letters go out.

This is a long and painful death. Shoot me or spare me, but please do something.

I understand this, but what will be the employment status of those who are in such countries where decisions take long? Will we become contractor workers that are paid daily (with minimal or no health benefits) by Broadcom while we wait for severance? Or will VMware's contract still continue until severed? I appreciate it if someone could enlighten on this. 🙏

In countries (EMEA) that "will take long" your words not mine.

No! If you are FTE you will on closing...and depending on your countries labour laws, will have some time after that.

Your contract/employment moves to BC.

YOU will have to return to the office as BC employees.

Work in office for at least a month+
, whilst consultation takes place with the relevant labour laws in said country.

health benefits have been paid to those companies for the year, seems like too much effort to retract with everything that is going on?????

Also curious here....

SBU

It's still busy here. Things have not stopped.

Some of the comments here are worrisome. If their team is going that slow would Broadcom even want it?

So don’t expect to be receiving a severance letter in the next few weeks. Many countries have specific legal processes like consultation periods they have to go through.

“OK. Because I did not receive it, nor did any of the managers I work with.”

I was mistaken, it was actually Snr Director and above - not all managers

From global management call today, NO severance letters will be sent out until AFTER the closure, as all letters will come from BC and not VMware. Some countries may not even hear anything for months! So don’t expect to be receiving a severance letter in the next few weeks.
Many countries have specific legal processes like consultation periods they have to go through. It’s not straightforward, and most people won’t hear anything until after closure and even then it could still be a while.

Second-hand info: there was an update in today's leadership meeting (Sr. Directors + VPs) that letters will be coming in the week before close.

That seems consistent with the rumors about the 26th.

It has already started, if you haven't gotten a letter you aren't getting one sadly.

Not so sure about that. These things take time to trickle down.

This is a total sh-t show. I expected transparency from Broadcom. Wasn’t Hoc supposed to be brutally transparent? I love VMware but now I will finally look outside if I don’t receive an offer this week.

From what I have seen, most people that don’t have some huge deal(s) that can close or be pulled into this quarter checked out right after the last all hands meeting a few weeks ago and that won’t likely change until they know what their fate will be, which for those that get an offer also includes getting accurately paid any commissions owed, getting an offer that financially makes up for some of what is lost benefits wise, none of which is guaranteed. Broadcom is likely to see many reject an offer made to them or take it only to then immediately start looking to bail, but I’m sure that Broadcom has planned for, expects and even possibly counts on this. This possibility will be even probable if Hok pulls a Musk and antagonizes everyone from day 1, which is very likely, IMHO.

there are delays and acceleration happening on our end to WRT budget, benefits, etc.

AVGO had 1+ year to plan this out and for a $69 billion merger they are making plans 2 weeks before close? ridiculous! Sounds like chaos!

AVGO person here...there are delays and acceleration happening on our end to WRT budget, benefits, etc. Lots of plates spinning in both organizations. Don't be surprised of 11th hour changes, or a decision made, then reversed 2 days later.

I'm sorry you guys are dealing with this nonsense. I'm ex-CA so understand exactly what you're going thru.

Wasnt the 16th always speculation

Yes. It was always "mid to late October" since we were told in the Manager's Forum. However, people have twisted that to an exact date of 15 Oct. Then realizing that was a Sunday, they twisted it again to 16 Oct. Then twisted the Mega Bash being on the 13th as representative of this news.

This should not be news. We expected this. However, it is news to those who have been listening to Q and moving goal posts each week based on new rumors.

I heard that BC HR is very much in delay because they are dealing with thousands of offers they have to put together. That‘s probably the real reason for any possible delay.

The 26th is the day of the last company broadcast so people now jumping on that day? Ultimately , no one knows. Im just going to wait for november. Not going to worry beforehand. Thats only 3 weeks away. Make the most of it !!

I'm BizOps guy. I received GOOD RSU compared to my base salary. But I'm also not mentally prepared. I wanna let go, Laid off. I'm waiting to hear that I'm "fired". But there are chances, me getting offer from Broadcom. I'm worried about it. im in anxiety.

  1. so you’re saying people are not already checked out?
  1. keep in mind, you don’t want a bunch of emotional, pi---d off people roaming around with internal network access. Machines will be bricked or access cut off prior to layoff notices, unless someone totally fu--s up.

“Is it possible that VMware can send out mass communications prior to close, notifying employees that they are not going to be retained, and making the VMware severance offer?”

VMWare can say to everyone on 26th or any day before close that all offers have been made. If you did not receive one then you are likely to be not retained. BUT they will not say you guys have been laid off before close because BC has to lay us off. And they can do so only after close. Maybe very same day but post close. VMWare laying us off will nullify the retention RSUs given to thousands. BC has to do it. They will for sure. We just got to go through the motions. I feel for all the BU folks because they don’t have any clear indications. Ops folks have been mentally prepared for a long time.

“Basic rule is BC cannot mass communicate with us before close. Close is on 30th Oct. People being laid off will not receive any communication from BC till we all become part of BC on day 1. They will send out offers but those will be to individuals as 1:1 communication. So offers starting on 16th makes sense but mass comms on 26th and shutoff people on 27th is just not possible unless they close on 25th.”

Is it possible that VMware can send out mass communications prior to close, notifying employees that they are not going to be retained, and making the VMware severance offer?

And Broadcom can concurrently send out 1:1 offers, starting on the 16th…?

I just find it hard to believe that the offers will start flowing on the 16th, with everyone getting more and more anxious each day that they don’t receive an offer, and having to wait 2+ weeks for the Sword of Damocles to fall. No way is that right…

These kind of date throwing is what is irritating here. I know everyone shares stuff they hear and it’s ok if it’s 2nd hand, 3rd hand information. But please use some basic knowledge of how M&As work (we had more than 1 yr to Google few things) and think a little bit. Basic rule is BC cannot mass communicate with us before close. Close is on 30th Oct. People being laid off will not receive any communication from BC till we all become part of BC on day 1. They will send out offers but those will be to individuals as 1:1 communication.
