Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Job prospects

To the VSPers, what are the job prospects like for those of us leaving Oxy soon? I know its tougher since the virus and all, but I need a realistic picture of what to expect. I’m not an oil and gas specific employee, so I can work outside this industry. How long did it take most of to get new jobs? And with what kind of companies?

@1avc - izmu here. I'm just over 50 and in a non-oil & gas role that's transferrable to just about any other industry. It definitely helps in the current time.

I don’t work for Oxy, but I read these boards. I work for Haliburton though and my days are numbered. I’m a supply chain rep and was going to get in at Oxy. I guessing that’s a no?

It is tough for any jobs except medical, supply chain, retail grocery, etc. With 6,000,000 Americans out of work and filing for unemployment it may be years before retail, oil, airlines, hotels pick up. Some have picked a target of 30% of America's workforce being out of work. I hate to take that 30% cut, but I am beginning to realize it could be much worse. The times I have made out good was when I have been laid off and had a job waiting for me. I am afraid that will not be happening this time and many will need every dime they have to make it through these times. Lose the health insurance and it will be even worse.

General advice, find a head hunter and do a hard job search. See what comes up. Don’t forget you have up to 45 days to rescind the VSP after exiting as long as you don’t sign the waiver.

Uh...have you not been seeing the news? There are no engineering tech jobs in the near future. Sorry dude.

I was actually hired a week ago doing online consulting. Getting paid more than when I was at Oxy. I’m in IT.

@icyj: are u concerned with being lay-off since you were recently hired and with the market going crazy right now? I’m reading where newly hired folks are being let go already and job offers being rescinded!

@izmu: if you don’t mind my asking, what line of work are you in? And what is your age? I’m over 50 and I’m concerned about age-ism.

I'm not really looking at the moment (on the fence on whether I'm ready to retire) but I continue to receive inquiries from contacts and recruiters. I'm averaging about 2 per week and I've been gone from APC since late 2019 with the VSP.

I’m an engineering tech. Can someone tell me what the job prospects are like in this field? With the recent pay cuts, I need to leave Oxy. It’s time.

The market was really good for really strong technical skills up until a couple of weeks ago. I had multiple offers to choose from, and ended up accepting something which paid more than Anadarko. But most of Oil & Gas has pretty much dried up. I know a few people that went to some of the majors and a few other Oil & Gas companies, but now those companies are all on hiring freezes. Even many non-Oil & Gas companies have started freezing hiring, although I think some of those freezes will be lifted after things recover. Industries like airlines and Oil & Gas will have a much longer road to any recovery and job prospects.

I was hired 6 weeks after I accepted my severance. I’m just an office assistant, so I’m not vying for some big exec job. I’m with a small manufacturing company now, and I consider myself fortunate. Best wishes.

Not gonna lie, bro, it’s tough out there. I had one interview before Christmas but haven’t heard a peep since. I’ve applied for 9 positions and got one measly interview.
