Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Some people just can’t move on

I left about 2 months after the acquisition was announced. I was faced with dismissive and ridicule remarks and labeled reactionary and and panicky. I guess when facts aren’t pleasing some tend to go in denial “VMware is too big”, “VMware is not Symantec”, “Our products are VMware, they wont do that”. Now I see those same people on LinkedIn, and they can’t move in. All they talk about is VMware and what Broadcom is doing to it. Some go as far as recommending competitors for whom they don’t work, they are just angry and want to see the new VMware collapse

I will admit, after the response I got when I left, slight I was faced with, and how dismissive they were of my concerns, Im laughing

Yeah, sorry, transition package was too good and even if laid off the severance would have been even better with my tenure… no way I would have dipped early and left all the RSUs on the table that are now worth 3x what they were. Glad you moved on… don’t come back

"Some people just can’t move on"

Most of our team didn't try to move on when the job market was better, now they wish they dared to leave when they had a better chance to land a new role with a growth company. Now the KKR deal and anticipated headcount cuts make them all nervous about the job they have. Lesson learned, timing is important when you choose to leave.

Most of people visiting here seems to be ex-VMware. That explains something.

"I will stay as long as they keep me and find another job when they kick me out. This strategy always worked out well for me."

I can understand the motivation for this mindset, choosing to be a victim of circumstance based on the belief that employees at large companies have no control over their life.

But there's something about accepting this way of life that just seems defeatist to me. I want more control, so I prefer to at least try and expect more than the bare minimum.

I am with VMware currently. Joined 4 years ago. Worked for a number of top tier companies before. From my experience nothing is free. Everywhere it is cut throat. I have been through lay offs as well. I don’t care about the company culture anymore but do care about my team dynamics. I am in a very good team and the RSUs are really enticing. I will stay as long as they keep me and find another job when they kick me out. This strategy always worked out well for me. I will deal with job search when it comes to that. Do not want to borrow tomorrow’s problems today. Caveat always save for a rainy day. Also definitely there is always a job that needs you. May be we have to take a pay cut or compromise some compensation and benefits. That’s how I am approaching this.

Understand this one thing, and then there is no mystery about the denial, fear and anger. If you're one of the VMware employees who have been here for 10+ years, the thought of finding a job somewhere else is a scary transition. Our directors and managers are terrified of change. It's all they talk about in our weekly team meetings. Yes, they're angry.

Oh come on, I get to be ridiculed and made fun of for doing the right thing and I’m supposed to not come back to return the favor?

“Some people can’t move on”

Says the person who has to come back to an internet forum almost two years later to have a pop at people who were ‘dismissive’…..
