Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Union for Technicians?

After thinking long on how I might convince any readers that this post is legit and that I wasn’t representing HR I concluded that I can’t - so I’ll just ask.

If you are a technician at F8, are you interested in joining a union (CWA to be specific)?

There are pros and cons that you should absolutely be aware of but the topic has come up several times at GF and its happening in some other key 24/7 firms in the state.

I don’t intend for this thread to become a running list of the cons presented by people who have no dog in the fight (non-technician employees) just seeking input from technicians that would be for or against this. Please do a little research prior to engaging, ensure you understand the whole union picture. Thanks!

I'd love to be involved in starting or joining a union to Global Foundries, I'm glad this is anonymous but kind of wish it wasn't so I could talk to the OP and help! Come find me!

Unions usually don’t survive bc they don’t even start. Folks fail to keep their mouths shut and ki-l the thing before it even comes alive.

I was a staff technician at F8 for a few years before going salary and entering the Eng ranks.

I can only offer my perspective. If you come to GF from a vendor, already possessing the technical skills and street cred to command a decent wage you’re good to go. For everyone else just starting out at a company like GF, you’re totally sc--wed, you will be underpaid from the start and you will never claw back unless you switch companies.

For that reason I can see a union as a good thing.

I left GlobalFoundries over a decade ago with a handsome settlement for their wrongdoing. Just as in IBM before GloFlo, a union will never survive. If you are a good technician with a positive work record and decent skills, consider a move to wave of growing semiconductor being built in the south and west. Relocation is challenging but a move on your own terms is always best. GlobalFoundries works on old technology so salary and training will never be optimum. Make your move.

Well, a union at Glbalfoundries would be terrible. Why? It's Globalfoundries. Anything to do with Globalfoundries is terrible.

I would join. Technician for 7 years, Compass and GLINT is a joke and does nothing for us.

This comes up every now and then on this site, and typically gets buried under anti-union comments. How much of those are from HR or other people who aren't interacting in good faith, who knows. Good luck.

A union would benefit everyone, but its an uphill battle. Most F8 techs don't know how different it is in Dresden, for example.

the best thing to do if you're not happy with your salary or work as a technician at Global foundries is to quit and get a better paying job at a vendor.

every technician in globalfoundries is 100% underpaid.
