Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Return to Office means exactly that. RETURN

I see people bragging that they badge in, have a coffee and leave. That is not return to office and is in violation.

If you want to work remote, that is your choice but work remote with a different company. I go in at least 3 days, some weeks I go in all 5 days.

Good, you got me worried for a bit with that 'badge out' thing.

@pt

That's a great question. I meant "badged out" figuratively. It would have been better to say "left the office." You know, my brain's getting so lazy working at IBM that I find myself taking liberties with language these days. Speaking of liberties, today's WFH day for me. You can probably guess what that means. I've got a meeting this morning and need to give a short presentation on some "research" I (er, AI) did. Then I just show an interested face the rest of the hour. And that's about it! Everything else to do today I did last week. I mean ChatGPT did. Again, liberties with language... My boss can't believe how productive I am. Some light coding, research, run some stats... Oy, my feet are ki-ling me. I've got a whole backlog of Netflix saves to address today.

Which office are you going to to have to actually badge out? There is no badge out at my office… I just badge in and leave right away so I can enjoy the rest if my day! Yes, IBM is great these days, you can get by doing just the minimum.

@fx Funny how it turned around, at some point time, the strategy was to save money on office space, having people work from home and come to the office only when neccessary. Proving collaboration tools implemented to allow it, saving commute time, gas, energy overall and then use it as excuse for lay offs.
You know, i've been working from Europe, after Kyndryl spin off, no near office, but working mostly with colleagues in the US. All the time best ratings, but "excel" table does it all. Working around the clock, didn't matter.
It's ok to meet people in the office, but me in the next job it was always more about socializing, waste of time, which i had to compensate by late hours anyways to make things done. Most of the time travelling in the office it meant to me to spend 2 hours driving a day, socializing, but i got nothing really done in open space as too busy to be able to focus on what matters - the work.
RTO might be good for some collaboration, but overall, at least not from my perspective, not for any productivity gains.
WHY TF we have all the online tools for?

@mc yes, absolutely marvelous that with a little bit of thinking the IBM management are outsmarted by the clever employees who get to do what they like and it is not IBM work.

Today I badged in, locked my laptop to a workspace, and set an automation script running while I went out for coffee, breakfast, a little shopping, then lunch. When I came back I answered a few emails and badged out. My boss says I'm doing a great job, even though I've never met him. This place rocks!

When you treat employees right, they do not hate you. IBM is despised by hundreds of thousands of workers in the US alone. Trust me, that was earned.

Basic decency matters. There is a reason why corporations have not treated employees like this forever; it comes at steep cost. When you decide it does not, then what comes around goes around. This kind of hate is karma.

@fx and how is your church going first line making out with your mother and your sister ? Is he promising you your Band 7 promotion before the end of the year for your Think 40 super skilled badges ??

And are you using your special skills to take care of the special needs of Krabanaugh and Robbie the Slobbie Hood ?

@OP Yes Arvind and his groupies love us all so much that they're forcing RTO during a time of high gas prices. Anyone remember when IBM was bragging about being a "green" company?

@fv

This is not India this is the US. Arvind is making tough decisions to make IBM competitive. I am sure it weighs heavily on him and Jim Kavanaughs shoulders.

Layoffs are not easy. It takes a toll on management too. I am sure many of the people laid off were excellent workers. Unfortunately this is the world we live in.

Mr Gerstner saved IBM. Arvind is making it competitive. Ginnys declining revenue impacted IBM and Arvind is steering the ship into calmer waters

@OP IBM has dehumanized hundreds of thousands of workers. Most of those are recent, sacrifices to allow him to descend to his fiery throne. There is no respect for the individual; and anyone over 40 is a "dinobaby". Want to know how many of those 100k were fathers or mothers? IBM's top export is dehumanizing its own people. We are all just numbers.

Rather than invest in the future in talent, Arvind takes his fiery throne as the man who sold out the company for a quick buck. He lacks all integrity. "Hard choices" that make him hard; you better get on that.

I don't care about the anti Indian undertones. When Indians are invited into a US company they take it over. It is the worst business culture ever - blind obedience over personal responsibility.

India is also the most racist country on earth, inventors of the caste system with an obsession for how light skinned their children are. American Deep South - hold my mango lassie; India has had two more thousand years perfecting racism.

@OP, our Band 6 H1B Visa, go join your master in the hot place. He has made a place just for you. Bring some knee pads.

@f2 no, your Band 7 is about as useless as the soiled toilet paper that you left behind after you have took a dump on Alvind's office desk to show him what you thought of RTO.

And you did that to show him also that you want your Band 7 in a hurry (chop, chop, got it??). And you are tired of waiting and dealing with all these ingrates on this site especially the ones who write about Rob the (Slob) Hood and don't appreciate you and IBM with their vitriol, hate and bile. Isn't life tragic enough for you ? LOL !

OP is exactly what's wrong with IBM. Instead of focusing on business metrics that matter - if you're in Sales are you hitting your quota, if you're in Product are you shipping quality products, if you're in Consulting are you staying client billable - he focuses on nonsensical metrics like # of days in the office vs target.

I am not worried because My 1st line told me I am doing phenomenal and encourages me to upskill.

There is a lot of negativity here. If It was not for Mr Gerstner there would not be an IBM. And Arvind is leading IBM to even greater things

@ev you will finally "get it" when "Bob" sends you a text at 3AM telling you your "role" (CIC Chief IBM Cheerleader) has been eliminated or AI'd to Bengalaru. Then you can enter the real world and see how worthless your IBM badges and Think40+++++++ is (is not). Your band 7 is and will be about as worthless as a used dirty "band aid".

Racist undertones toward Arvind, Making fun of Jim Kavanaughs weight and Anti g@y slurs directed at Rob Thomas. Quit dehumanizing people

@OP You've really captured the hearts and minds of everyone here. I think the next step for you is to craft an email message with all your ideas about what IBMers need to do better. Then send that message company wide. Also start tracking individuals' behavior and send a weekly review to your boss and up the line. Everyone loves a snitch.

@br No we just hate you. You are blind to the sufferings of your fellow man and spew constant propaganda about IBM that isn't remotely true on a good day with a strong wind behind it.

IBM had been engaging in laying off their top technical staff. The more successful you were, the more money you made and thus the more likely to lose your job. This doesn't exactly sound like a winning strategy to me.

As to RTO, many of the people impacted were being asked to return to an office different than the one that was near them. That office is now suddenly shut down. The next closest office is now very far away. That is not a "return". Maybe it means that in Hindi I don't know but not in English. That is just a way to get rid of people without paying severance.

I'll say it again, but you need a really good set of kneepads. What you do every day will mess up your knees for life if you're not careful. On the other hand, once you're laid off, you'll be a top contender for OnlyF-ns.

@OP you’re so naive it’s hilarious. you’re not even close to the smartest person in the room, trust me on this. the people here have lived with ibm for 10, 20, 30 years and understand how it functions. you do not. reading books is not the same as experience, either you’ll eventually learn that or you won’t.

What? Are you a troll or are you fu--ing autistic? You come to this site where people are concerned about being laid off and you spew company BS about how great and reasonable IBM is. How the fu-k do you expect people to treat you? I'm sure your coworkers secretly hate you and roll their eyes every time you speak at a meeting. Let me guess, you always sit next to your boss at meetings. And FWIW, Arvil is an insect and Krabanaugh is a fat toad.

@OP is likely a company shill but let's assume for a moment that they believe what they wrote. My message to them would be to get your head out of your azz. IBM doesnt care about you...at all. They WANT you to quit. They want you gone. They will replace you with a college hire who doesn't know how to make a phonec all or handle a difficult situation. If you left this world today, they would send your wife flowers and have you replaced by the end of the week - most likely with a college hire, Indian or they'll just double your coworker's workload (with no extra pay of course). IBM DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR FAMILY. Figure it out.

@ay They will offshore your job whether you're WFH or in the office. I've seen it happen both ways. Dont fool yourself. All you are to IBM is a number and an expense. If they can hire someone cheaper than you it wont matter to them where you are located.

@aw it also makes it harder for them to justify offshoring your job as it’s less clear it can all be done remotely

I think it's pretty clear that this board has been infiltrated by a few of the Pipmunk interns who clearly have nothing better to do than to pretend they love this company. I dont know anyone who is badging in, having coffee, then leaving. Even if they are, so what? I think the @OP needs to ask themselves "what is the purpose of RTO?" It's not to foster a better work environment or teaming because many of us have teams that are spread out all over the place. I go in 3 days/week. It's difficult to find a place to work there and have Teams calls, but Im far more productive at home. I've decided that IBM is a bridge job and Im using them for a paycheck. They pay me $X/hr for my services, and I do the bare minimum to ensure I dont get PIP'ed so I can leave on my own terms. They dont own me. If part of my pay is coming into a building 3 days a week to talk to nobody else who works there then go home, okay. I'll commute on their time. It's ridiculous because when I was WFH full time, I worked longer hours. Now they get me from 9-5 M-F and no more.

@OP - The only purpose of RTO is to increase attrition without having to pay out for severance. It's easier for Big Blow if people leave on their own. Like most other IT companies today, all Alvind, Rob, and the rest of the shareholder's wh0r3s care about is the price of the stock. All you are to them is cattle. Wake the F up.

Not having enough desks is a logistics issue, not a serious argument against returning to the office. Companies can use staggered schedules, hoteling, assigned days, and space planning to solve that. But let’s be honest, the real objection isn’t desks. Some people just got comfortable never coming in. If leadership wants RTO, then the adult conversation is how to implement it properly, not pretending a seating chart is the death blow to in-person work.
