Why should Ford or any employer cough up generous salaries and benefits when they can outsource to the third world.

The internet had been around for a while now. 30-some years. Working remotely isn’t new. If Ford could have successfully moved engineering to the third world, they would have done it years ago.

@1tqy+1qI4qhwo Oh, I don't doubt that I'll be replaced by a Mexican or three, but I am sure they won't be able to do my job. Ford can try it, sure, I don't mind. We know the clueless management believe everyone is replaceable, except themselves, and now after they laid off or chased away the best guys in the company, they are surprised by the huge recall costs.

Their solution? Hire a quality czar and force everyone to pass some d-mb course, thinking that's enough to get better quality. Ha! Quality starts at the top, and Ford doesn't have quality, nor commmon sense at the top, nor at the midle. Quality is about implementing and rigorously following certain processes, which we know were eliminated to "save" money, and whatever quality process that remains, is constantly sidestepped by managers and their last minute additions.

I thought I could be at Ford for another year, just to pass the financial storm coming, but these RTO winds are forcing my hand. Here is the thing... after I start applying to jobs, and I already did, it is just a question of time before I am gone. All those fear instilling games that managers like to play at Ford, have no impact on me. I knew I was ok for 2-3 years more (no pension, not an old ge---r, I work and contribute, and my team has lost all but me in the layoffs of the past 4 years, and I picked up their technical responsibilities.). However, RTO to a random desk in a loud environment? Thanks, but no thanks.

Well, just keep crying about RTO and how you won't do it no matter what. There are plenty of Indians and Mexicans that can do your job remotely. Why should Ford or any employer cough up generous salaries and benefits when they can outsource to the third world. The quality of work won't be as good you say. Doesn't matter as long as a buck can be saved, doesn't matter how many time it has to be done over. Good luck cry babies, I hope you get fired and the sooner the better...

@1ezm+1qI4qhwo Design is done in CAD working with suppliers who are not in Dearborn. What value does RTO bring in that situation?

They should also make all the US based managers and executives move back to Dearborn.

Give me a desk. A little space that's my own. With fabric walls to seperate and allow for a modicum of privacy. Maybe a shelf to store some things on. Then I will go back willingly!

The temporary desk setup is ridiculous. I get to watch some guy I don't know pick his nose all day, while another I don't know chews loudly with his mouth open. All while being bombarded by gossip from folks down the way.

No one likes these temp setups. Not even the youngsters that were supposed to save the company, who only excel at bypassing requirements because "they don't want to do it that way".

At an automotive company, you should be in the office or at the plant if launching a vehicle at least 2 days per week. Come on! You need to review your vehicles, parts, wiring, software and so on. Give me a break! You can't design, test and build a vehicle with most of the company at home 99% of the time.

I am not going to retire from Ford. I will pretend to work from home as usual and work in my side jobs. I have been making a lot of $ for the past 3 years working from home. 👍

@flg+1qI4qhwo. Go ahead and retire. Then you can stay at home and work your side projects all day. There are plenty of people willing to stay in the office past 4, and those that will take their laptop home and work in the evenings as well. Nobody cares about whatever trivial task you are willing to stretch out until 5 at home.

@rmj Give me a real desk then we'll talk about going back full time.

Look, returning to the office is the right thing to do for Ford right now and Ford leadership supports it and is directing it from the top down. Numerous studies by experts show that team collaboration in person improves results and leaders like Doug Field and others agree that migration back to normalcy with an office environment is urgent. If not returning to office for yourself, think of the company and the improvements to our bottom line that will result. It's not hard people.

I ended up working on Saturday to catch back up.

My wife works for company that has a 1-day in the office per week requirement. Not Ford.

When she gets home, she has to work all evening to get caught up because she can't get anything done in the office. Her coworkers and boss do a lot of "collaborating" about kids and cats and husbands and ... Not a lot of work gets done.

Daycare is a companies problem?

The question was,

Why are people so opposed to working in the office?

not, "What reasons would a company accept?"

People save a LOT of money by not commuting to an office for no other purpose than to sit at a temporary desk logged into WebEx meetings all day.

Companies that figure this out will be able to pay people less than they would for those who have to commute. To put it another way, if people have to commute to an office, they are going to demand more money to compensate. For the past few years, companies haven't had to pay this premium. Other prices have increased while salaries have remained pretty much flat (especially compared to real inflation). Don't make any mistake about this. People will demand to be compensated for their time and money spent in commuting.

Daycare is a companies problem? Must be a Millennial!!

Wonder what many did the past 50 years?

I can see if one is a programmer or CAD designer to work from home that can be tracked but the ones making excuses are the ones taking advantage of the situation.

Oh, the ones below threatening to quit if they don't get their way.... Did you ever think that Ford understands they will lose people and this is by design? See ya.

Agree with the previous post regarding WFH to avoid daycare not being possible. We have done that a couple times due to illness keeping our son home from daycare and even with two of us working from home, there was no way to take care of him while maintaining productivity. I ended up working on Saturday to catch back up.

You want to work from home to avoid daycare?! If your children are young enough to need daycare, which implies preschool, how can you focus on work while caring full time for little ones. If they’re that young either your job suffers or your children do. Wanting to WFH so you can be a stay at home parent isn’t an excuse you should discuss with your boss.

If you have kids, working in an office means daycare, and that ain’t cheap. Then there is the commute time that eats into your hours. Transportation costs. Clothing costs. Lunch costs. Exposure to your coworkers’ kids’ diseases. And for what? To sit at a temporary desk logged into WebEx all day?

@zox+1qI4qhwo If management cannot figure out how to get work from people without physically looking over their shoulder that is a management issue. When I go into the office my work day ends at 4pm so it is highly unlikely they will be getting more output out of me than WFH where I can work until at least 5.

@zox+1qI4qhwo -

That's fine. They can do that if they want. More power to them if that's how they want to run things. That alone will have people quitting so as long as they are good with that I guess there will be no issues. If I had to come back to the office, I'd find another job. Just a business decision on my part as well, nothing more. Cause = effect.

Overwhelmingly 90% of employees want WFH. Studies have proven WFH is more efficient. The problem must lie elsewhere....

Why are people so opposed to working in the office?

Any company is going to want to be sure they are getting as much work as possible from each employee.

Working from home made that more difficult.

I predict we will all be back in office 5 days a week by the end of the year. And the quarterly reviews will become more harsh to weed out the slackers.

Every org is doing their own amount of mandated time in office. I believe everyone will be required at least 1 day in office per week.

Ok, I guess that #formatting trick only works for ~one~ word at a time. ~Or maybe I confused it with three tildas in a line~.

I’ve been wondering how prr we poke have been able to do the fancy #formatting I tread here about it:

For example, starting and ending a string with a tilda (~) will ~give yo italics~

PD CAD has been told to come in Tuesday now on top of Wednesday and Thursday that we have been doing for a year starting next week. So an extra day in office just to sit on a webex and Not "collaborate " with our engineering counterparts who btw sit in different buildings and ot country. This place is a dysfunctional mess
