Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Anyone else think age discrimination is getting out of control?

I’m sure Walmart has their attorneys review their layoffs. But it still feels like older people are being disproportionately shoved out of the work place and out of the good paying jobs.

First I wonder how long it is until a reporter does an expose on this issue. It ought to be easy at Walmart.

Second, I wonder how long until you start seeing tons of class action lawsuits over this.

Third, why isn’t this issue coming up in the election cycle? Old people vote, but they’re getting tossed out of their jobs across the country. There needs to be legislation put in place to stop this.

And before everyone shrugs their, shoulders, just remember that you’ll get old too someday. How would you like to be unemployable one day just because of your age?

Why aren’t more people talking about this?

I agree completely. I am a 63 year old woman and worked at Walmart a few years ago. We parted on good terms. I decided to go back to work and Walmart is the 1st I applied to. Funny how now I'm not qualified for the position, the same position I held for 3 years. I have been considering the whole age discrimination and whether it is the real reason they won't even talk to me. I'm sure of it is. And I desperately need a job. My hopes were shattered.

39 year associate, bad evaluations came when the calibration system started. Last year took a 3 month LOA for foot surgery, got evaluation 3 days after returning. Received the worst evaluation I ever had. Below standard eliminated me from being eligible for the new positions that were in new alignments, never considered, 63 years old. We are now considered fill in for missing management. It’s amazing how many gold badges are in this position. But what can you prove, there’s the unfair evaluations to back up the point. Wish there could be a way to prove what we all “old timers” know.

If you’re over 50 and had any medical issues, you’re on the HR watch list. And yes it does exist. The matrix Walmart uses is based on age, LOA, and pay band penetration. if you have medical issues it is waited highly for termination. HR users a nine box graph to rate performance based on the above. I had Excellent reviews with meets and exceeds expectation from all of my managers. After I had surgery there was a leader ship change and my manager moved to a different department. The new manager 30 years younger, decided I was no longer useful and began writing me up claiming performance issues. I contacted the investigations group and filed a complaint for harassment and age discrimination. After exactly 6 months my complaint was closed and I was told Walmart could not disclose any information I provided to them. The negative performance reviews and harassment escalated to having two weekly meetings explaining my position and maintaining an hourly task timesheet. ( I was a senior salary manager at the corporate office). My advice, Walmart was a decent place to work sometime back, There are better companies to work for so don’t get your helps up and start working for Walmart. I haven’t worked for Walmart for two years, I don’t miss it

I am about your age. I also suddenly received a poor evaluation rating despite good metrics and a solid history of great evaluations. This all mysteriously happened within 2 months of taking 4 days of LOA for recovery from a minor surgery. It didn't matter that I had previously only used one sick day in all my years of service. After receiving a coaching for something ridiculous I saw the writing on the wall and found another job. I guess it still pays to have a good reputation. I know I did exactly what they wanted to do but I don't care because my stress has disappeared.

Good luck to all in the same boat due to the immoral business practices of this corporate predator.

I am one of them. Had the best numbers in the company. Running a great market and was forced out by a 35 year lunatic who told me I had no ideal what I was doing. 63 years old, 28 years with WM and boom gone. I can name at least 20 others just like me. If you work hard, make good money, and are on the upper end of your pay band you are going to be replaced!!!

EEOC is aware of Wal-Mart's assault on the 50 and over. The Clinton's grand plan was someday everyone works for Wal-Mart. Most EEOC investigators are deep state..and are expected to hold the Clinton party line and keep Wal-Mart out of trouble. At most they'll give you a letter for you to go it alone. Most law firms know this is the deal and will not touch your case...so Wal-Mart HR can literally sh– on thousands of older career women and get away with it. No one dare hit back in the press or government...'cause there are "handlers" to take care of things. Have you ever heard Trump say anything negative about Wal-Mart's wrong doing over seas? He knows better. Smart.

I have seen age discrimination at my store. They demote you or start coaching you for doing your job. If they want to find something they will. If not they will make something up. They harass you until you quit.

Soooo, here's the deal with Walmart. Currently the longest term of staff left is in Human Resources or better known as TC and PC. So most of these people have been in their role 10-30 years. Now the company will be stream lining theses positions into a role called People Leads. Even though these associates have no coachings on file, have been exceeds expectations on their yearly reviews etc they will now have to interview for the same position they have now. And to add more indignity to these long term associates, during meetings, the management team are telling associates they all can apply and interview for these people's job. Funny as hell huh! The company was built on 3 basic beliefs, the main one being respect for the individual. Where is the respect being shown for these associates that are in these positions? I think a class action suit is needed for this situation and that any and all of these individuals need to ban together. Let the company lay off the sorry assistants taking selfies all day so they can find the extra money for the company going to 15.00 per person per hour. Anybody that knows any journalist, let them see this post! True story and absolute facts!

1) Pitch the story to your local reporters, write letters to the editor both localky and to national publications, set up a Twitter account and @Walmart about it. They won’t respond but others, including journalists, will.

2) Research the candidates for your next election that you’re eligible to vote in, and vote for who is likely to actually help their constituents push back on discrimination and help you stay employed. If they have a past voting record, look up how they actually voted on issues. It’s work but it’s worth doing.

I believe they discriminate against older employees.I know several older employees at Shelby NC Walmart that have had their hours cut to 1 day a week while their younger employees are getting more days and hours.Think they do this to get rid of older employees They say it's corporates fault because they make scheduling now not Dept managers.Dont believe it.if that was reason why are just older workers hours being cut.

WalMart is known for building their business with older staff. 1) they wont unionize 2) their wages are low...and 3) uncle sam is already paying their healthcare..NOW if you're amongst a well paid minority of folks (primarily women) who built their career at WalMart.....WATCH OUT. Wage and age are two reasons they would target you because you can be replaced by someone younger at a much lower wage who is much less $$ burden with healtcare. WM self funds their healtcare so this only increases the incentive to get rid of older employees. Our government is broken so Walmart rules.

It would take a salty lawyer indeed to make a class action suit stick against Walmart.

But it’d be a heck of a way to make a name for yourself. No guts no glory.

Hell, Walmart is one of the few places that will hire old people. The problem is people being there 20-30 years getting paid well while younger people out working them getting crap. One of the reasons co-managers are being fired is because they are over paid when an asst manager could do it

Three groups of society who will always be screwed are school kids, the mentally ill and the elderly.

In this case, Wal-Mart is A) most assuredly hustling the older folks out the door---I've witnessed this first hand, saw a 94 year old People Greeter just shy of her 5oth year fired over the lamest excuses you've ever seen---and B) gambling on their legal staff to deftly dodge the vast majority of any damage from this. And so far, it's a safe bet. What's needed to turn the corner on this age discrimination thing will be a land slide massive class action win that wil set an iron clad precedent, so terrifying that companies---yes, even the mighty Wal-Mart---will only then play fair. Cuz it'll be cheaper.

Meanwhile, barring that, we're going to see record numbers of folks, themselves long term employees who've invested all their productive life spans into building this company, being screwed worse than a drunk frat house pledge date.

True - a lot of companies discriminate on age, I haven't noticed it at my store though...

I’m sure Walmart has their attorneys review their layoffs. But it still feels like older people are being disproportionately shoved out of the work place and out of the good paying jobs.

If your over 40 and you want your severance you have to sign a paper saying you won’t sue for age disc and you won’t talk bad about walmart or embarrass any of the fools in bentonville. Would you be willing to risk it?
