Thread regarding Truist Bank layoffs

What are the 2nd, 3rd, 4th skip level managers doing all day?

Are they only on meeting surveillance and maybe PowerPoint deck duty? I've never seen them do anything more than be surveillance on Teams meetings, and fly into other offices to be surveillance in person. Why do we need so many levels of surveillance? Can someone observe their teams and find out if they are doing something more than just sitting there?

Which level is AVP? Asking for a friend.

@hp if they’re doing their job correctly, it’s very MUCH nights, weekends, and taking blame. My team is focused and intentional, my best days are when I’m shoulder to shoulder with them on calls, and I get a lot of blame for things that aren’t my fault. And that’s 75% of my job…..supporting their work, keeping the cr-p off their plates, representing their interests, and celebrating their wins to upper management that otherwise wouldn’t know about it. The jobs are different, and I’m only as good at mine as I can help them be at theirs.

@fg This is 100% true. No numbers or rankings; just good ol’ fashioned EQ and listening, mentoring, coaching.

@fr I would love to hear your job described by someone a level or removed from yours. “All they do is…..” and then hear your response.
I do a great deal of what you’re mocking and know, not just think, I’ve made a difference in my team’s performance and livelihoods, both individually and as a group. I can’t speak for every manager in every organization of course, but without those relational skills and responsibilities within them, the company stays stagnant and dies. Maybe that’s your point, that Truist managers/leaders are allowing the company to die because “all they do is…”. But these skills are absolutely valuable and necessary. True, you can’t count them or assign metrics, much like you can’t how much you love your dog or how good a friend you are. Too bad your leadership doesn’t make their contributions more apparent.

@fr This is quite on point. It is an absolute clown show.

@hw - AIP*; 70% is the target for pay grade 118, decreasing incrementally thru pay grade 110 @ 15%. It does not get paid out at full target every year. All financial institutions have roughly the same or similar comp structure for higher pay grades.

Pay grades 115 and up are not eligible for merit increases, and havent been for the past few years.

@hp not one is measurable. But they get huge bonuses every year, APIs worth up to 70% of their annual salary pay grades that's already over $200k. And there are 8 levels of management under every leader. That's money being thrown out the window when worker bees do all the work making them look good. Then the nerves to bring everyone back into the office and create a tracking system to ensure they are not slacking off is sickening.

"A leader’s work is different. Most of it is thinking, messaging, positioning, socialization, relationship building, learning, connecting information and teams, advising, guiding, setting direction, and admin/HR."

And isn't it interesting that none of these things are measurable in any way? And that none of them require working nights and weekends? Or being on call? Or taking blame?

@fr This is why you won’t make AVP, you do not understand the intricacies of the position.

@fg
Thinking??? This term does NOT exist on these levels
Messaging??? Monitoring Microsoft Teams to see who’s yellow
Positioning??? Shifting body from one cheek to the other
Socialization??? Walking around the office investigating who is not at their desk
Relationship Building??? Staying close to micromanaging folks
Learning??? Asking lower reports to find the answers because they don't know squat
Connecting Teams??? Throwing team leaders under the bus so they trauma-bond
Advising??? Ordering people around to perform tasks that make absolutely no sense.
Guiding??? Controlling folks
Setting Direction??? Nodding because they have no idea what’s being talked about

A leader’s work is different. Most of it is thinking, messaging, positioning, socialization, relationship building, learning, connecting information and teams, advising, guiding, setting direction, and admin/HR. Oh, and dealing with teammates who don’t understand beyond their role.

Good question? They sit on teams meetings all day with other WFH teammates while enforcing RTO to those who can least afford to commute so SunTruist gets a tax break. Hypocrisy at its finest!

Our DM just comes up with schemes to frame people for things they are innocent and unaware of so he can be seen "taking action". It's all fake and fraud. As far as I know he has been doing it for 30 years, not to mention the scam he runs with one of the vendors.

I worked at BBT/Truist for over 20 years. In all that time, I only had ONE manager that did actual work. Naturally, they fired him.
