@ff I would say both. Studio for reasons mentions by a few people here. It's honestly an antiquated group within the company. Very old school way of thinking there. As the company evolves around them they are stuck in a bubble of arrogance. Way too top heavy on the salary structure, just look at the amount of level 7/8s there vs how many people actually do the work. Others areas at wtc might have one L8 covering hundreds of workers. Over there it feels the opposite.

As far as design when it pertains to production parts and process's I would say there is some bloat on that end as well. You start talking about DREs that "own" one or two widget parts on the car or maybe a couple models. They didn't design the part, there might not be changes to the parts, there might have been no issues since the part was designed but for some reason we need to have a whole group support it. That goes for almost every system and part put on the car. Leadership is scrambling trying to right the ship but they are cutting the wrong items out of our proven process's. Ask yourself why we still have multi thousand car floats that need repair at ALL of our plants... I'll answer for you... We didn't actually test anything like we used too because some out of touch boomer thinks AI and virtual reality will solve the companies problems. While we are at it why is so much money being dumped into battery development at this Wallace lab and the shuttering of mock up. The public has spoken, not many people want evs, especially without the tax credit. maybe Steve Jenkins can answer at the next Cole podium fireside lunch and learn brought to you by Starbucks.

GM stock is screaming higher. Right now above $62. Only 1% decline in yoy earnings due to the tariff write down. In real terms, more record profits.
The naysayers can fill my blue enamel coated GM coffee cup.
'Why does this company still exist?'
Boo hoo!

Let's see, over a million customers up-side-down thanks to no other excuse than poor quality. Looks like a great institution with visionary management that deserves unlimited bail outs. What's good for GM is no longer good for the country.

GM helps our society by selling, then recalling over a million units for transmission and engine problems while trapping customers in six year notes just to pay off the bill... Yep with visionary businesses that need to take billion dollar write offs and promote importing off shore Chinese manufacturing I'm starting to see how beneficial GM really is.

@xa
"misfit of the highest order with no real value to society"

Why does America's #1 manufacturer of automobiles exist?

  • It builds transportation options for millions of Americans (and people in other markets) to travel to their jobs, family members, access to food and medicine and more!
  • Adds tens of billions of dollars to the economy and the government tax systems
  • Provides work, resources and money to scores of other suppliers and businesses around the world.
  • Employs 162,000 employees globally!

Your question seems silly on its face, but is probably loaded with bitterness and hate.

Why does this company still exist? It's gone beyond a normal business and morphed into a financializing misfit of the highest order with no real value to society.

@c2
When you say "design side of the business", are you talking about studio design?
Or are you talking about the design side where the chassis, engine, drive unit, wiring system, auto interior, body, etc is designed?

You are 100% correct about Design. So many entitled people who think they run the company. They have been allowed to deviate from GM rules and policies and basically operate as a separate company. They have their own different attendance and purchasing standards , which conflicted with the rules the rest of us had to follow. Upper management would just shrug their shoulders regarding the pointy shoes group.

Should probably recoup the money out of the design side of the business. What a bloated waste of space some of those folks are. You could probably cut half the salary members and still be ok. Some of the most entitled employees reside there, that's about all they do. Talk about a team without a plan.
