Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

What do you miss from the “old SAS”?

I’’ll start:

Yearly pay raises close to or exceeding inflation
Accepting salary based on 35hr/wk, flash forward, management expectation of 40-50, no adjustment
Pressure to ignore benefits paid by lower salary like RFC for “azz in chair” time

I miss the product quality. In the early days, we built a great product, but our quality declined over the years.

I miss some of the managers I had in the early days. I don’t miss many from the later days.

But I do miss my colleagues, and the sense of purpose that came from working on the best product in its market.

‘Then I got “laid-off”.’

What do you mean by that? Either you were laid off of you weren’t. Why the quotes?

@11z when I got my job at SAS in late 2000’s, that was when we had old badges with SAS on them. You’re right, felt “special”, people would come up to me at grocery store, asking me about it, how to get a job, etc…the cafes were awesome, having my own office, fair food at cafes during October, and you could get a container of awesome chicken fingers (for my kids) for like $5.00 from salad bar. Something happened though, they started hiring inept managers that would scroll Amazon or FB all day, and literally do nothing. It was a dream the first five-six years I was there, after that, downhill. Then I got “laid-off”.

Sigh…..

Being proud of the company's direction and culture.. Viya changed that for the worse. That steady drip never ceased. That caused me go from being a very happy employee to a being a wretched employee. After much painful consideration and hoping things would get better, my patience finally ran out. I lost hope. So, I departed. Found fresh air to breathe and greener pastures! Very happy now.

The cool folks are all I miss. Good luck to all!

I miss the feeling we had when it felt like SAS was king of the hill. Articles written about how SAS was the 800 pound gorilla. And we'd go to SUGI and users were wildly excited about SAS and as a SAS employee, I almost felt like a rock star (albeit a low level rock star, but still a rock star)! Those were the days my friend.

“Campus shuttle”

Heck, I missed the campus shuttle even when it was still around! I remember they used to post a sign in the R lobby when the shuttle was out of service. We joked that it would’ve been less labor-intensive if the sign were only put up when the shuttle was in service. 😉

I miss when the people hired were actually qualified or at least semi qualified to do their jobs.

The trend of hiring unqualified people puts a lot of extra pressure on those of us who have worked here for a long time in supporting roles. We depend on subject matter experts to actually BE experts in their areas. When they aren't or when they just dgaf, it creates so many problems.

"when the user groups were useful for all"

Totally agree. When it was called a user group it was very useful. When the name chaged to forum, it became fluffier.

@fe agreed. The hijacking of the user conference to instead be bro-marketing has been a huge disservice to the customers

More than lip service to technical skills investment, conferences, training, etc.

R&D development is a feature factory at this point.
