Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell UK workers are organising

Dell workers in the UK are currently in active discussions with the CWU and UTAW and senior Labour MPs to secure trade union recognition.

For too long, inaccurate information has circulated within Dell UK claiming that Dell does not recognise trade unions. This is false. UK law is clear and gives workers the right to organise and to be represented by a trade union.

The legal process is as follows:

1. A trade union must formally request voluntary recognition from the employer. This request will be made within the next two weeks.
2. If Dell refuses voluntary recognition, the union has the legal right to apply to the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) for statutory recognition.

To win statutory recognition, we must show that a majority of UK employees support union recognition, and that at least 10% of the workforce are union members. If an application is rejected, the law prevents us from applying again for three years. This makes it critical that we stand together and get this right the first time.

All UK workers are asking for is the same protections, voice, and representation already enjoyed by colleagues covered by workers’ councils.

In the coming weeks, leaflets and posters will be shared across UK sites with more information on how to get involved. Under UK law, workers have the right to trade union representation. The decision on whether Dell UK has a recognised trade union belongs to workers, not executive leadership.

Now is the time to organise.
Now is the time to stand together.
Now is the time to claim our legal right to a trade union.

@OP That is a very valid point. Trade unions can introduce challenges for both employees and employers, and those considerations should be acknowledged.

At the same time, the political and business optics of a US multinational taking decisions of this nature would need to be considered carefully. In the current environment, such actions could attract significant media and stakeholder attention and may be interpreted — rightly or wrongly — as being unsupportive of the UK workforce.

For organisations with a strong UK presence, these broader perceptions can be just as important as the immediate operational considerations.

Be careful. These Union 'heroes' may become villains if Dell pull out of the UK and move their sales teams to other non-unionised countries . Lots of UK sales already based in India, easy for them to move SB/MB and even some corporate/enterprise sales out of the UK , massive cost savings too . This has always been the threat .

@f7

We’re using an independent information website and some digital ads to share factual information about trade unions and UK workplace rights. This is to protect the privacy of organisers and employees.

As a matter of good practice, employees are advised not to discuss unionising on company systems, on company property, or during working hours. Information should be accessed in personal time, using personal devices.

From October 2026, provisions under the UK Employment Rights (Employers) Act 2025 will allow trade unions lawful access to UK workplaces, including Dell UK sites, to provide union information, subject to statutory conditions.

@b7, this post concerns UK employees exercising their legal right to join a UK trade union.

Speculation about whether Dell UK sales staff are “doing their jobs” is not relevant to that discussion. Performance management is the responsibility of Dell leadership and HR, not a matter for public commentary on a post about lawful union activity.

If you have concerns regarding employee performance, the appropriate course of action is to raise them directly with Dell HR through the proper internal channels.

I've been saying it for years. USA Dell employees need to do the same. Its time we stand together and work as a collective for fair wages, fair work loads, not to mention benefits and retirement. WE make them money. The product and services do not themselves, nor does it support itself. Remember that. Should we have a say when changes affect our livelihood?

If sales actually did their job there would be no need to go to CWU or any other organization.

This is why other countries like the UK, Germany, Australia, and others are far ahead of the USA when it comes to employee rights.

Here in the USA, we let Large Corporations and Govt Institutions run right over us at every turn. Changing these comp plans without employee representation should be illegal. We need to fight back.
