I'm not surprised about the amount of money owed, but I thought Sears had already exited bankruptcy?

Remember that this article is about SearsHoldings, not Transformco. The sears and kmart stores are under transformco not sears holdings.
That of course doesn't mean transformco isnt a pile of dog woo too.
They have no interest in their business being dragged downward.
Perfect opportunity Sears Mexico needs to buy Sears U.S.A. and make Sears great again.
@etk+1aB8lhmu: Thank you for your explanation. It's a lot more complicated than I had real. Thank you again.
Sears is still in bankruptcy with no end in sight, although the tax loss transfer issue is going to force Eddie to move forward. The next session regarding this is in the late summer/early fall I believe. The way it's going it might reach the ten year mark like the Circuit City bankruptcy. The case has accrued the most legal fees of any bankruptcy in history, so all of the recovery is going to the lawyers, a de minimis to court fees and the trustee, and creditors are going after Eddie, ESL, and TransformCo to make up their losses. Judge Drain outright stated that if Eddie doesn't save jobs, he's going to end up a cartoon villain. He's handily dropped Eddie into that bucket although he won't let that prevent him from running the most nonsensical bankruptcy in history. He should have sold Sears to the liquidators or just gone into Chapter 7 from the get go, operating loss tax benefits be damned. Meanwhile Eddie is busy trying to sue everyone who ever trusted him, relatives included.
