Thread regarding VMware layoffs

VMware is not a bad employer

I'm an old-school enterprise tech guy. VMware has been the most positive working experience of my multi-decade career. Does VMware have its issues? Sure it does. But compared to some of the other places I have worked where the corporate culture was nasty and toxic, I will gladly accept those issues.

Some of the firms I have been with had a non-stop revolving door where once an employee realized what a negative experience the place was they would bolt at the first job offer. There is something quite simple that most large companies fail to grasp: That if you respect your employees and treat them nicely then the company will reap the rewards of having a loyal workforce who will create better work. Something that perhaps our potential future overlords should take note of.

OP is @the+1hnYvoaj.

Let’s over achieve and get a 40/60 ratio! Who says Hock Tan doesn’t care about diversity…

The idea to fire only men until you reach the 50 / 50 goal is obviously sarcastic, but also brilliant as it points out how ridiculous the goal is.

I think it was a joke. For example, if are cut the way they say we will be, we can keep 2,500 women and 2,500 men and then we will reach the 50/50 goal!

This 50/50 rule maybe from MD. I see this meaning that most positions for woman will be in management/marketing/finance/hr - colleges and high schools lack women going into IT. Throw the boys club in as a factor and women don’t last very long in the field. Look at the number of women that left the field during Covid.

As part of the companies 2022 agenda we will achieve our 2030 goal by firing only men until we reach our diversity quota.

VMware could not find enough women who wanted to work on boring computer stuff, so they had to extend the 50% hiring goal to include gender non-binary and underrepresented community members. Their policy is to sit on resumes until they find someone who fits the identity goal and let qualified people who don't fit the goal go elsewhere.

Recently announced by VMware. "VMware is redefining the workplace of the future through initiatives that include diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). As part of the company’s 2030 Agenda, VMware is committed to hiring 50 / 50 women and gender non-binary / men, and to achieving the goal of 50-percent of our managers identifying as a woman, gender non-binary, and/or from an underrepresented community by 2030."

Yes, those directors and managers with no reports will need to be laid off first. Individual contributors, engineering for sure are the safest.
Even the PLM and PMM individual contributors are safe I think. (clearly not as safe as engineers).. but still..

I don't think it is a bad place. I think we do have quite a bit of bloat though. Senior directors with no reports or only one report. Managers with zero reports, free beer and food everywhere when we are pushing WFh etc. I think we are pi----g money away and it needs to be reeled in either by Broadcom or someone else
