Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Is it far fetched to think promotions will return once Dell hits their employee number?

I'm guessing we are in the mid 90k mark at this point and assuming 2k are WFR this spring, plus another 1k over the summer, then another 2k in the fall, maybe they will start bringing promotions back lol?

@hw We used to have coaches/tech leads that would ensure L1s were doing their due diligence before engaging L2. This took a tremendous load off the L2 teams. Sadly Dell doesn't believe in this process and got rid of it.

@jq that entire DE program means nothing now. They’ve ruined it through politics. It’s a “who do you know” vs. “what did you do”. I have no idea how the company survives at this point. It’s like the United States. Not idea how it’s functional anymore.

Many got promoted to DE roles. Seems to be more that typical this year, may be to compensate for less promotions to DE in the last couple of years.

Manager said the DE's (L2's in ISG department) are under pressure as there are not enough of them to take on the escalated cases from frontline. Well Mr/Mrs manager, there are front line engineers capable of being DE's, would it not make sense to promote them into a DE role? Oh no, no funds for that, we will give the front line engineers pointless training and useless labs and after that week of trainings then they are SME's. Rinse repeat, rinse repeat, rinse repeat.... Its getting to the stage now people have just given up "Mr customer I have escalated your SR to L2. If you have not heard back ftom them yet, here is the managers email....

OP throwing around numbers is useless. Do you know the actual numbers? Of course not.

The 10-K for Dell will be out soon and you will see the reported numbers.

@em Indians are incredibly racist. They’ll only promote other Indians. They’d never promote or even hire another white person. I’ve seen it for years and I’ve seen them get fired for it. It’s sad and pathetic.

@OP well - another Indian in Data Science promoted. He was a remote worker who somehow could “suddenly afford” to move to Austin and got promoted. I doubt anyone still thinks this isn’t now a race-driven company. All the recent promotions under the same Indian VP and two under his Indian Sr. Director.

massive nepotism at dell and promotions? one thing for sure is they wont be based on merit which is why they have those inspire awards the recognition you receive will most likely have to come from other dell teams you support not your org which only sees you as a hit to their cost center.

Dell is a “who do you know company” and not a “results” company. They’re doubling down on that across the board. If people like you, you play a political game, you say “yes” to anything and aren’t a free thinker, you’ll get promoted. Otherwise you won’t.

I’ve been promoted every year at Dell. The opportunity is there if you are good.

@OP there are promotions that happen in silos.. but they are at a much higher level, typically exec level promos have happened and will continue to happen. For the normal workforce, it ain’t happening anytime soon.

The way to answer these questions is to ask "Will this cost Dell more money?" If the answer is "yes" then Dell will not do it.

Promotions were practically non-existent before they started with the headcount hack and slash strategy. What on God's green earth makes you think that'll ever change?
