  • CNBC: Peanut butter raises
    More companies are adopting or considering “peanut butter” pay raises, which are across the board increases given equally to all employees rather than tied to performance. While 48 percent of organizations plan to continue performance based raises, 9 percent already use uniform increases, 16 percent plan to implement them this year, and 18 percent are considering the shift.

Companies cite tight compensation budgets, cost cutting pressures, concerns about bias in performance ratings, and administrative simplicity as reasons for the approach. Some also see it as more equitable, ensuring frontline employees are not overlooked.

Experts warn that equal raises can demotivate high performers and create long term retention risks. Although a weaker job market may limit immediate departures, dissatisfied top talent may leave when opportunities improve. During the Great Resignation, low pay was a major factor in record quitting levels.

Employees disappointed with uniform raises are advised to explore other benefits, update job materials, and monitor the market, while carefully weighing any decision to leave.

@ef

Not true for everyone. Benefits matter far more to me than salary. I wouldn’t work for free, but raises/promotions mean almost nothing to me compared to insurance. WFH is a close second priority.

A smart company would consider that employees are motivated differently, and also that different roles require different approaches. Alas, we are no longer smart like that; JC’s one-size-fits-all approach to RTO is just one example.

Companies can give the BEST benefits and MOST PTO in the world but ultimately, the biggest thing we (employees) give two sh--s about is MONEY. Our salary is what keeps people at a job - any job. Insperity points or gift cards mean NOTHING. I can't use either of those to help pay my bills or car insurance or car payment or rent. Then we get TAXED for those "rewards" LOL.

For the majority of people in the workforce, the incentive of working hard is for better raises, or a promotion. WIthout either of those, what's the fkn point? If I know that I'm gonna get the same raise as someone who just started, or does nothing at all... then why in the living HECK should I do more work than them?

Yeah, and lets see how great this works out for ANY company lol... What kind of employee is going to do more than expected or, even do GOOD at their job if they know they are GUARENTEED a specific raise? None, is the answer. A participation trophy, if you will. If this is the case for Dell, then I have no interest in going "above and beyond" or taking on new projects/work in hopes for a higher raise.

I mean, promotions are and have been non existent for US employees for the last 6-8 years so, who tf cares about a 3% raise lol? What, exactly am I working hard for if I'm already guarenteed a comical raise and no promotion in the future? Minimal work is what I work for. A paycheck, as I play video games at home while on the clock, I suppose? idfk

@a9 no truer words; they cut the talent that made customers and companies believe in dell now the company is reaping what it has sewn. But sadly it's not just dell merits are not recognized anymore it's about packaging/branding companies value kool aid drinkers above anything else

@ab I'd love it if Dell started doing PB raises for my group. As it is the boss gives his 3 best buds big raises ever year and the rest of us get nothing.

The raises are so piddling it doesn’t matter. They never keep pace with inflation.

This is nice, but all the top talent has already left Dell years ago.
