Leadership Email Regarding MAP Reviews/Downgrading

If anyone out there reading this has the email instructing managers to downgrade their reports to a 2 to CAP them and term them or force them to quit, I'd really be interested in seeing it as this has happened to me and I'd like to sue the ba--s off this place.

There won't be a paper trail. Leadership is trying to downplay this and pretend it is warranted. Make it public - blast glassdoor, indeed, reddit etc. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

There is no paper trail. I was a manager. I gave my employees ratings and and then a few days later, my manager would always call me and say I had too many 4s or 5s and tell me to lower the ratings. No rhyme or reason to it. Just know that your direct manager has no real control over the ratings.

Sr Dir here (grade 31 in OptumTech). Can confirm. Was asked to revisit my numbers. I had two 2's bail before the holidays. I was forced to downgrade two of my 3's to 2's (they were 4's last year). They will be gone soon. They didn't earn that, but they will go on a CAP and be ushered out. It su-ks.

And I wasn't allowed to have any 5's in the US. That seemed weird, but this group is getting ready to outsource a lot more to WiPro...so I guess 15 years of experience in Engineering will be replaced by a recent college grad in WiPro.

I'm leaving as soon as I can, i'd recommend others do so as well. (If you are in the US)

Has anyone received a 2 & made it through the following year or is receiving a 2 truly a death sentence? Obviously, keeping my resume current is a must, but with the job market as bad as it is right now, staying put as long as I can would be ideal.

Review is popularity contest nothing more. Been that way since beginning of time has nothing to do with actual performance. There will be no paper trail just a verbal interaction from up the food chain so no record so it never happened. Managers are given quota of how many of each number rating they are to give. Just hope they dont pick you. If it lands on you plan your exit strategy they have deeper pockets than you and $$ wins in litigation

They don’t care if the overseas people are green cause they paying them 2 bucks a day. A person on a team I know all of a sudden is being targeted and they are a person of color and no one can figure out why the harassment. They have stellar work ethic but what a coincidence . They are beginning to agree.

Same sh-t happened to me for 2024 review. Had 4's & 5's past several years (close to 15 years with the company) with a 3 almost 5 years ago. The 2024 review was a 2, even though I had received numerous Bravo awards, accolades, and praise from multiple teams. Optum/UHG is just looking to offshore everyone in Optum Tech to India via OGA. I have a feeling they will be cutting me come the next RIF in a few weeks.

They downgraded me from a 3 to a 2. I did all the work and even more then others, but was given a 2. My manger didn't even know which projects I delivered way before the deadline and accused me of being late. When I told them I had delivered it ahead of schedule, they couldn't think of an excuse for giving me a 2. I think since DEI is dead, they don't want people with my skin color working at Optum any longer. Just wondering how many people with skin color other then white got downgraded.

This is legit and can confirm. All verbal - grade 29 pushing grade 28 to downgrade rating to 2. Grade 28 filed an internal dispute review (IDR). No clue what IDR outcome was as grade 28 was recently laid off Feb 2025. So that’s what someone gets for being fair.

There are no email chains for these things. Generally your director pulls you in a call and tells you that there are “too many 3s” or too many 4s and that it needs to be “rebalanced” to fit the company guidelines for ratings. I haven’t been forced to give people a 2 but I have definitely been forced to lower 4 and 5 ratings to 3s.

I can’t help you because I left but it happened to me, over a 14yr career I had been 4’s and once 5’s across the board. Then I pi---d off a client who was a disorganized and failing manager bi--h for whom my patience and diplomacy wore out! Next thing I know I’m on a CAP, I completed it by simply ignoring all the stupid things she said and keeping my mouth shut but I knew the bad review was coming. So yeah if you are on the outside and getting downgraded, stop working hard and do the minimum then make job hunting your priority because you need different mgmt, suing them is more trouble than it’s worth because UHG is a powerful monster!

Is this legit or speculation? I've been consistently 4's & 5's past several years. Had my review this year & was given a 2 with very little reason as to why. Obviously, not eligible for pay bump or RRP. Blessed to have a job still, but seriously...this is ridiculous.
