Today we found out that a member from my team who has only been on the team for two years will be getting promoted. That person is still very new and has a lot of questions and in my opinion work to do. One of other members on the team who has been here for 6 years is always helpful, knowledgeable, and shockingly passed for this promotion. If anyone deserves it then it’s him and I’m shocked he didn’t get it. Surprised manager or vp didn’t feel this way and went with the other team member.

@eb classic FUMU - F -Up Move Up
I interviewed for a role which was a great internal mobility opportunity.
They obviously did not end up giving me the offer but to someone who struggled to even open pdf in a word and edit it.
i moved two teams since then, yet they still reach out to me to clean up their mess as they have “no expertise “ in the team to do what they needed to do.
why the he-l did they give position to a “leader” who can’t even execute???
Saw this play out years ago under a “beloved market leader.” Another individual and I both applied for a role we were already doing in practice. We both had strong numbers and relevant experience.
The job went to someone who didn’t even apply.
We brought it up to HR. They nodded thoughtfully and filed it directly into the void.
The interview process is often just theater.
Which person kisses @55 better? Promotions are rarely about performance, experience, etc. but rather about managers promoting pets. Not good for the business but no one higher up the chain puts a stop to it.
The only recourse for the person who was passed over is to do the job and little more. When the person who was promoted has questions or needs help, the rest of the team should say they aren’t sure or the current state may not be what they knew then follow up with the promoted person in a team meeting to ask for an update. Maybe nothing will change but everyone will see what the “leaders” know and do and where they are not up to the job.
At times we may think we are the best and smartest of most knowledgeable but leaders look at other things like strong will, attitude, communication, feedback from other leaders to make promotion decisions .
