The commute became nearly impossible to manage. The good news is that I found another job. While it pays slightly less, everything else—including having time for my actual life and the ability to work from home most of the time—feels like a gift from the gods.
If you're fed up with Dell, just be persistent in your job search. A great opportunity might just pop up when you least expect it.
Stunted pay and no upward mobility because you are a remote worker is abuse. It's like saying to a person, because they wear sneakers they will not go anywhere here. Just d-mb. Its an issue of control. Dell wants to feel like they control the people. They give power to people whom the back of their heads look like thumbs and like to cosplay as leaders but are really built for sweeping floors and lifting heavy objects.
The commute doesn't matter if the job is worth it.

Me too. I left last year, to go work for a former boss who is now a VP at another name-brand high-tech company. He hired me as a contactor, and I am now earning just shy of 2x what I was earning all-in (incl RSUs) as a Director at Dell. I've never before worked as a contractor, but I have to tell you - it's a pretty sweet gig. He's asked me if I'm interested in converting to an FTE later this year, but I told him as long as he has the option to continue me as a contractor, that's the path I prefer.

Commutes can be inconvenient, but "impossible" seems a bit exaggerated. Good to hear you've managed to find another job, even if it pays less. Remote work has its perks, sure, but let's not romanticize it—there are plenty of trade-offs, including lower pay, reduced upward mobility, and stunted career growth.
And as for the advice on job hunting—well, that's hardly groundbreaking insight. Most people already know persistence is key.
If you quit yourself, you lose the package.
It's not even the RTO for me... its the fact that more and more often, "leaders" feel entitled to treat you however they want including demanding as much of your life as they want under the constant threat of layoffs. Dell has little man syndrome and rewards bully culture... The only way around is to get out. Good for you!
