Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Do we need managers?

Each team has SL, PO,CPO. Each team has SoS, SoSoS.

Each team has jira, dashboard.

What is the role of managers nowadays? Each layoff round I see engineers got impacted much more than management team members. Many of them turn in individual role in org chart ,but still do management tasks.

No we don't need so many managers.
Also, non-Skill pre-emanagers are fill in every teams now. Dell need to layoff them and hire real engineers.

@e9 Yes, if anything, Dell has intentionally squashed the value of managers. It's turned into a complete push from top down, no discussion (let alone argument) is allowed. Managers have no discretion and have no ability to make anything better. They're just expected to spin the message coming from above. A waste of many good managers.

There are like 5 levels of management that can just be deleted. Useless empty suits that build spreadsheets based only on input from others. Simple use case to be replaced by AI.

“ Managers are the ones supposed to make the strategic decisions and leading the team towards that strategy” - that’s the point. When our group was EMC, managers had a lot more discretion in policy matters and handling local issues. Now managers just collect data and move it up a level.

Whereas staff meeting were a give and take on problems and issues, now we sit on a Teams meeting as information and rules are read to us. There may be discussion but it doesn’t help.
My manger is very good, or was when we were EMC, now she’s just filling the role until retirement comes.

Managers are the ones supposed to make the strategic decisions and leading the team towards that strategy. If yours isn’t they’re sh!tty and not doing their job. As far as POs and SLs are concerned in ISG that was 100% botched. You don’t just take people and put them in these roles. That’s why S@S is failing 100% in ISG.

My direct manager is the only one in my org chart that isn't a total waste of space.

They are all useless and always reply "YES" to their upper bosses.

If we institute AI correctly - many levels of management will become superfluous. Since managers have little to no discretion these days the only purpose they serve it to write annual evaluations, which are ignored, and give the bad news that you aren’t getting a raise or a bonus.

My PO and SoS are just human spreadsheets. My people leader is configuring the systems for testing to justify his existence. I am sure all three make multiples of my pay. It's a upside down world we live in.
