Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Another lawsuit, this time for hybrids that spontaneously combust.

Imagine how much money this company is spending in legal fees. SMH

Yeah - after I submitted the post I re-read it and realized that I did nothing but rip on EVs lol.

What is was thinking - before I went on my rant - was that it is OK for OEMs to offer the product mix. If an EV works for some customers - then let them buy one. If it doesn't work for others - then offer ICE powertrains for them to buy.

I think it is wrong for OEMs to just taper off their ICE and ramp up their EV production and 'force' people into EVs. And don't get me started on governments mandating percentages of new vehicle sales for EV...

@e9+1jw7gc9yr I thought you said you had nothing against... LOL

Look, I see the same issues you mentioned, and a couple more, like recycling the batteries, and using "dirty" electricity to charge them, which kind of defeat the original purpose, isn't it?

We are not ready. Maybe in a future, with cheap electricity from nuclear energy, better batteries, better infrastructure, people can use cheap BEVs in the cities, hybrids in longer ranges, and full ICE on longest ranges. (Hybrids are not the best option on long distance driving). Of course, that means having several cars in a home, switching as the needs. But this is not a surprise, as polls showed, initially BEVs were in average, the 5th car in a household, and now, is the third vehicle (vehicles prices went down and gas went up with Biden), with 78% of BEV owners having ICE vehicles as well.

I don't have anything against hybrids or full EVs. At least not in principle.

But the mining of rare earth metals is terrible for the environment. The added weight of the propulsion systems is terrible for the roads. And the charging infrastructure is no where close to making me feel confident that I could find a charging station if I really needed one without a precise plan that includes GPS and weather factored in.

And I live in an apartment with no possibility of at home charging. They aren't saying the words out loud, but EVs are being targeted to higher earning people. At home charging is factored into their business models - late night less expensive rates. People without home charging options will pay significantly higher rates at public chargers, likely during peak hours (more expensive).

And to top it off, they are wildly overpriced. Government tax rebates (which i dont know if that's really a good thing) dont bring the price down enough. The vast majority can't afford them.

And then after ~8 years (probably less in extreme hot or extreme cold climates) later, the battery needs to be replaced. Which is very costly. So the people that traditionally by used vehicles that old will be entirely priced out. And how do the old battery cells get disposed or recycled? That's bad for the environment too.

If they were substantially lower priced, more people would consider it. But I don't think that will ever happen.

This is an exception, not the rule.

Ford makes some of the best electrified powertrains in the industry.

We will resolve these issues and move forward stronger than before.
