Want a promotion? Make friends with the higher ups. That's it. But know that after you get promoted, you're more likely to get cut. Higher pay has become a liability. There's no winning here anymore.

I'm having a hard time even getting an interview as an internal candidate. I've had recruiters contact me a month after I apply. Why are they so slow contacting people for a phone or hirevue interview?
Yeah I turned down a $40k+ raise to work for DDAT. Fu-k that. Not working in DDAT.
If you are in IT this is 100% true.... Not partially true under TM/AR etc... 100% true.
First reply person must not be in IT.
Partially true….you don’t get those positions unless the higher up’s know who you are….. you don’t have to be their buddy, but they have to know how you work and how they work with you. On the other hand, a lot of people get those positions due to vacancies when the smart people leave and nobody else wants the job,
In terms of layoffs due to compensation…,I’ve been on the inside on various sides of the decision criteria, and that’s not really the case. There isn’t as much of a gap between leaders at the same level than you’d think until you get to ED and above. A VP isn’t going to save the universe making a decision whether to lay off the LD making $160k or the one making $185k(VP’s can have massive comp variations). The savings comes in by doing consolidations and transferring entire functions to consultants (who cost just as much as FTE’s)
