New Culture?

Why push culture initiatives when the culture itself is deeply broken? A tagline or a new crop of leaders throwing around buzzwords won’t fix the mess. Stop hiring external talent with a “vision” to make aimless strategic decisions that disrupt the people doing the real work.

Too many strategic decisions have been made with real consequences for employees’ livelihoods and careers—only to be branded as part of the “new Macy’s.” Maybe if people didn’t feel like they were constantly at risk of being on the chopping block, they’d actually be inspired to embrace a new culture.

I'm not sure what value the constant visits to stores bring? So much money is spent in travel and accommodation by large entourage. For what? To see a spruced up store? Total waste!

This "new Macy's" sh-t has been going on for over 7 years now!! The "new" has been progressively weaker and failing Macy's.

We need a new culture at my store. At least half of the salespeople get preferential treatment with their schedule to not close. Also, there is always whining and complaining about where you get assigned to work each day. It’s a selfish environment.

Ok, I'm gonna say. It's too bad the company is closing some small stores becuase that's the culture they're trying to replicate. Hospitable... that's kind of what you have to be to each other and to our customers to make it work in a small door! And yes, my store is closing but trust me not because of "under- performing" but because our real estate was worth a lot more!!! Consistently beating last year and outperforming our neighboring Go Forwards/flagship doors during Holiday '24! Definitely a HUGE MISTAKE in closing #555 OTAY RANCH !!!

Are you serious? Macy’s managers or leaders don’t sit down with their associates to have lunch and show some appreciation? Do they even know what the break room looks like? I’ve never heard of this and I have been working in retail for over 25 years. Leaders need to engage with their employees. Make them feel like they are part of a team.

Salaried execs don’t go into the colleague break rooms because they have free rein of the office, conference room, and back areas that are normally off limits to colleagues. Pedestal effect.

@e8+1jm0cfqgq, you know why we don't go in the break room? Because the colleagues can't relax if we are there and think we are spying on them to hear their conversations. The break room is pretty much off limits to the executive staff.

I was there when Bloomingdales sliced their staff in half and helped the Visual Staff collect money to buy paint.
I was also there during one of his walk-thrus recently and the guy didnt speak to ONE associate.

No...Tony isnt "onto something". He's stalling and playing Good Cop to Barbies "Bad Cop".

Noticed the people who are upset with the new culture change are old school managers and people leaders who have been working at Macy's for far too long and don't believe in new changes to their management style. Read a leadership book that hasn't been published 20 years ago.

Managers and Leaders have to be hospitable first with each other and learn how to support each other. Usually the attitude is ...that's not my department so who cares??? really? and the employees see these attitudes with manager and leaders gossiping about each other, talk about setting a hospitable example. The talk amongst regular employees is what leader gets things done and what leader doesn't and that usually comes from another manager or leader. Another thing is the favoritism buying lunches for certain employees and leaving others out...and leaders never stepping foot inside the employees break room....You don't like the new change in culture ....but the culture that exists now it's horrible. Of course this trickles down to the customer and I think Tony Spring is onto something. Treat each other with the respect they deserve or hire people who do and get rid of these people leaders who want to either sit in an office all day or are running around acting like tyrants. Macy's people leaders are the first ones that need to be hospitable towards the employees..set and example.

Yes, managers will need to peek into your private life. They will be asking you how was your weekend, what did you do, and where do you plan on going for vacation this year.

I heard the new culture will also focus on employees being hospitable to each other. Is this true? Macys needs a huge change in the way employees treat each other. We all have multiple priorities since the restructure and lots of pressure put on us to complete loads of work. But it’s been so disheartening to see how colleagues treating each other. Especially in the last 3 years. Whether it’s manager to colleague or colleague to colleague people are so inconsiderate of how their actions affect others. They don’t genuinely care about each other. Most the time they can’t stand each other.
There’s constantly conflict because expectations are not consistent from colleague to colleague. & Most of all our leaders are suppose to LEAD. Not just sweep issues under the rug or tell you what you want to hear. We need leaders who will inspire, direct, redirect, engage, and create a safe space amongst teams... not just with customers. Once we fix the broken from within we can implement it with customers.

I feel for the people who lost their jobs because of the store closures and workforce reduction. I've been there with another corporation which went bankrupt and closed. The reality is that happens when stores close.

Yep none of these people in the stage are in danger of losing THEIR jobs. Their perspectives are colored by that fact as they sit a little firmer in their seats.
