Thread regarding Canon Inc. layoffs

GOOGLE is not the answer

Canon USA’s transition to Google will end up being one of the most regrettable decisions of Sammy’s tenor.

If you are like me, you did your best to prepare but nothing could prepare you for the drastic change that was put upon us on Monday. I bet most of you sat at your computer and threw your hands up once or twice this week. The new tagline for Canon will be “ Blame on Google”.

As I start to learn the product more each day, I am finding out that Google simply isn’t Microsoft when it comes to corporate USA needs and wants.

If Microsoft was concerned that more companies would move to Google, odds are they wouldn’t have raised their per license structure. The reality is Microsoft knows they are better and could charge this fee.

Communication has been at an all time low this week because people simply don’t know how to use the product.

The money we save will be offset by the lack of production this product brings upon us.

The person who made this decision should resign immediately.

Can somebody explain how Google Groups is suppose to be better than a traditional shared email box in Gmail? Gmail is beyond ghetto to begin with, but this Google Groups application is just a total mess.

I work for a company that has provided me with an email box that doesn’t allow me to sort by date.

We are in 2026.

@15a Everything is done for him! Do you really think he sits at his computer responding to emails from a shared inbox, pours over large datasets, or designs presentation materials? He’s too busy flying around the globe for the next photo-op, he’s nothing more than a figurehead leader, not a hands-on leader. He’s like a communist dictator that will confiscate your private property, yet he will be unharmed by his own edicts and continue to enjoy a lavish lifestyle. Ultimately, it will hurt the company’s bottom line, but he will not feel the impact. He’s protected. Your job can go bye-bye in an instant when the company stinks up the joint. There are no consequences for him because it’s just deflect and make excuses, the standard playbook.

I’d LOVE to see SK navigate this nightmare without any assistance except for Gemini!

@vq "they aren't sabotaging the company"
the fact that it's impossible to tell whether they are or aren't is concerning.

@vq "that's like saying canon is run by lizard people"
source? having shook the hands of the CEO, i noticed it was rather scaley.

@vf there are 100 ways to go about it and they will go through them all. Google is just a major one affecting everyone.

Not sure what kind of math the other guy you agree with is doing but a simple search will show per employee the enterprise licenses are way cheaper for Google
They’ve also literally said how they’ve saved millions from the switch

because everything is a number to them (software costs, employee salary, garbage coffee they serve) they only look at the numbers of the item and not the hours lost to production because they know people will stay late to make it up and hit whatever deadline dates they make up. And people do. I get emails at 8pm and 6am why would they change if salaried people are “expected” to work til they die? Your hours are not part of the numbers they care about because people would rather give up their free time than lose a job that pays their bills Or have to commute to the city for better options.

They don’t give a fk about you and your well being but they are not trying to sabotage the company. That’s like saying canon is run by lizard people.
They want to make money they’re just too stupid to figure out how

@v5 I agree. There's a hundred ways they could have gone about cost savings if that were the only reason (easy fire the c-suite and cut their golden-parachute threads). this switch to google was intentional to either a) ki-l productivity to justify future layoffs, b) C-suite got a sweetheart backroom deal with google to switch. the current loss of productivity has already eaten whatever potential cost savings they thought they'd get.
shy of ignorance or apathy, the only other answer is willful sabotage.

@qp I looked up the cost savings. It's almost the same as 365. This is not about cost savings.

@dw the genius is the CIO of IT. The sole decision is cost cutting measures to reach this magical unobtainable profit goal. He will work at canon until his death or the company’s and won’t get the chance in the world where he’s not listening to presentations and taking credit for others work

I’ve been in meetings where he’s said overseas staff is cheaper but not as good but we need to save money soo…
Just so everyone’s clear IT is in the position to cut costs no matter what and if you want anything shiny and new it better have a damn good reason because it’s not getting approved if the ROI isn’t there. These cuts can include employees and consultants so be useful or be looking

ML is easy to blame because he’s the face man trying to sell us this garbage and it’s unlikely he suggested this debacle but he’s just doing what a good boy does and barks when the upper management pulls the leash

A product designed for children has become our new platform. Lebron should be fired! He failed with the e-commerce site and he's failed with what will become the biggest disaster in Canon USA history. Sammy, you're listening to the wrong people!

I hope someday the identity of the "genius" will be revealed so any other companies and customers will know enough to black ball this je-kweeds from damaging the rest of the world.

Just wondering when the company will put a survey out to see how people like Google?

Safe to say that will never happen. You know what also will never happen, the group of individuals who made the decision to make this move admitting they made a major mistake.

Like the original post said, labor is the highest expense to a company’s P&L. Why in the world would you give them an inferior product.

This is like taking a nail g-n away from a contractor and giving him a hammer to build a house. When you slow down the productivity of your workforce, you will quickly learn that saving money on a software actually cost you more.

I was not an early adopter. And I realize that you have to learn something when changes are made however, when you don't get notifications about emails, chats or meetings I have to wonder why in the world wasn't there a test group of REAL employees and a list of concerns before wasn't making such a drastic change. No wait I get a little tiny pop up on the gmail/chat screen bottom left a little bubble that shows I have a new message but if I'm not on that screen, I don't see it. I have to set alerts elsewhere to remember to join meetings. If this is working as intended, then this is definitely sad. You literally cannot do a simple task such as resorting your email by date, From etc. INSANE Oh wait you can search for it duh

I’m glad that others are finally realizing what I’ve been shouting from the rooftops SINCE LAST AUGUST when this catastrophic decision was announced.

Let’s start at the beginning. No risk assessment was performed whatsoever. It has only been within the last month that my direct manager has asked our team to document the impact of the Google conversion on our daily procedures. Why in the flying fook was this not solicited by corporate over a year ago? The simple answer, they couldn’t give a crappola. They were going forward on this no matter what.

The “training” provided is an absolute joke. The problem is that they want to do this cookie cutter, one-size-fits-all messaging, but everybody is impacted in different ways and there’s no personalized communication on how to deal with your specific issues. I had to laugh when they sent out an email last week telling us our primary source moving forward with questions is Notebook LM. Oh, how personable! That Notebook LM is not helpful at all and is contradicting itself.

It will only get worse from here.
