Thread regarding Ford layoffs

There's something wrong with the system here

Excel and you become indispensable in your current role and stuck forever. Coast and you get promoted. Now I understand why middle management's so mediocre.

@dw Or simply leave and come back in a few years. I know quite a few people who went up way more doing that than they ever would have if they stayed.

Spot on. Coasters are getting promos to jobs that aren't even posted. Its about who you know, not what you know. And that's why we are in such dire straights. The smart people who should be in leading roles are outnumbered by the incompetents. Like breeds like. Id--ts promote id--ts.

@dw Only because of the market conditions right now.

@dk Then why punish yourself? Go get what you think you are worth. If you CHOOSE not to, then don't complain. No offense!

@dk where are you in your salary band? Once you hit a certain mark in your salary band HR queries will come to supervisor regarding why you are not promoted. For example if you are in the 4th quartile of the GSR 6 salary band, there will be queries about why you are not being promoted to GSR 7.
Now people will not want to hear this, but in some areas there are still pay disparities depending on your gender and race. I once had a super star Asian female who was making 40k less than her peers. It took me 3 years of fighting with HR and my boss to get her salary to be on par with her peers. The LL5 told me, well she has been working hard for her current salary for years without complaint, why should I pay her more?

I am a female GSR and have been working for the last few years. I haven't received any promotion yet, even though I believe I deserve one. I am the only female among 20 members in our team, and to be honest, I sometimes feel left out. So, I don't think what you said applies to everyone.

Alas sad but true easy to get promoted thru the GSR ranks. Advancement to LL6 also fairly easy. But after that it is really not about your abilities - but whether you will play ball with the LL5+

HR and policies make auto-promotion and auto-raises a thing at Ford. I once inherited a totally incompetent GSR7 (mistress of the prior LL6). I was basically forced by HR to promote her to GSR8. I couldn’t find a darn thing she could do and tried to get her to transfer to another group. Finally her sugar daddy LL6 found another spot for her, which she still occupies to this day (doing nothing).

The thing is if you have an LL6 who is competent and secure in their abilities, they will promote you. If not they will pigeonhole you and make undermining comments in the ranking meetings and around LL5+. A favorite is “it’s not what they say/do but how they say/do it” with a knowing wink. Many a GSR’s career is tanked like that.

An observation from retirement. The insecure incompetent LL+ once retired are unmoored. They try to find places to replicate the Ford dynamic (HOA board at their retirement community etc). It’s tough when no one gives a F about you being a LL+, which is 99.999999% of the population on planet earth.

Not true. I’ve always excelled, and been promoted a lot in my career.
