Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Age discrimination comments said by Stankey

When did Stanley say “we don’t need employees who know how to use an abacus?”

i think it was the call where the head of HR resigned about a week later after he made those comments. The blonde woman from HR with the dead behind the eyes gaze. I can't even remember her name as she was not here very long and I believe she came over from Time Warner perhaps.

@a7 Legal wouldn't approve it. They knew he had opened a can of worms, and it was easier to sweep it under the rug.

@de It was a town hall. Comments were also made that if you know what dial tone is, it's time to go.

Actual event: stinky is a biased, narcissistic POS. At ERG conferences in 2024 “boomers are irrelevant “ his direct quote to an employee question on why he mentioned all generations except boomers.. said directly to a woman boomer.
In 2025; after his fiasco garbage public email… full room, microphones for q&a… he did NO q&a to audience..
And they had Corey su-king off as the guest speaker to wrap up the event.
The whole crew are delusional, liars, and care nothing about employees or customers.. as we off shore support
The cancer is removed.

@de It was the internal earnings review in summer 2023 after the initial RTO announcement. He said that our employee demographics do not align with those of the rest of the country.

It was also said that institutional knowledge held by experienced people wasn’t that big of a deal essentially (pretty sure McElfresh chimed in with that, saying that the knowledge drain from losing experienced people wasn’t a big deal because the knowledge of old systems/processes wouldn’t be that important and that knowledge comes from teams, not individuals.

I don’t remember if Stankey made the abacus comment during this spiel or somewhere else. The call was recorded and it was promised that the recording would be made available. After the sh!tstorm about Stankey’s remarks, they buried it and stopped recording all of these meetings.

Now it’s up to us to record and leak stuff to the media like how Kellyn Kenny’s remarks about the presence reports were leaked to Business Insider a few months ago.

It’s funny how he continues to go after the older workforce given his own advanced geriatric age

So sad that Stankey doesn't think my dial-up modem skills are important.

you people talking about age. Age has nothing to do with it. AT&T is lazy! Every one of you are lazy. AT&T built a lazy company for lazy people who don't want to work.

Ya'll need to stop looking for differences and realize that the old blue hairs and the young blue hairs are looking for the same thing.. A place to work where you don't really have to do anything. I'm lazy, you're lazy, stank's lazy. The difference is that I cost att about $100 an hour while stank is closer to $25,000/hr. So, really, why are we arguing about what some 65 yr old making $25,000/hr thinks about technology or productivity? He's effin crazy to dig on anyone.

Anyway, I got some reddits to look at.

yes but there’s still confusion of when the exact date was — seems like 3 dates:

official earnings call
internal call about earnings
Town Hall

he’s always insulted people but when was his crazy abacus reference that some didn’t even know what he meant?

And now he says the younger generations have been working at mom and dad's kitchen table and don't know how to function in society or work.

Who's left to insult and ostracize?

In the 2Q2023 earnings call Stankey said, “We don’t need all these old people. We need young people with new ideas.” He had also said, “AT&T doesn’t need people who know how to use an abacus.”

I don’t believe that is a legitimate quote re: the abacus.

And it believe that it was an internal earnings call for employees where he famously stated that our employee base does not match the customer base and we need to get younger. I am paraphrasing but it was something very close to that. And that was the first time those meetings were not posted after they went live. There was quite an uproar. And they kept him under wraps for a couple months afterwards.
