Optum is losing talent at accelerated rate

Critical resources with 10 to 25 years with the company have either left, found new jobs, or they're already interviewing. They keep hamstringing our engineers/innovators with increasing loads of security requirements and bridling everyone with additional jobs. Engineering teams have lost critical mass and it's all arranging deck chairs on the Titanic now. No one to blame but leadership.

This seems to have been the corporate trend in the US for a couple of years now. I don’t even know where to take the skills and experience I’ve built. Something is deeply wrong with a system that abandons human achievement, expertise, and accumulated knowledge so casually.

@dp Security requirements for Dev are taken straight from OWASP. OWASP is run by guess who? Dev/Engineers/Coders.

State exactly which requirements are wasting time and are not part of OWASP?

@d3 this is so true, and while it may be an unpopular opinion, I stay in a very generalized line of work, and I intentionally stay at a specific career level. It’s the only way to maintain any kind of job security in this market.

@g8 Methodical rationale? Have you been asleep for all of the security theater nonsense this company pulls? Or are you too incompetent to realize what a joke half of these "security" policies are? People like you who blindly go along with it are what's dragging this company down and making everyone's experience at this company a living he-l.

Funny part is that we're recruiting, hiring, and way-overpaying "industry insiders" from competitors or vendors we want to work with. For every 10 USA laid off we outsource 20 in India and 1 "AI" expert for like 3x typical salary but is really bottom barrel skill level.

The best contract negotiators are gone. If you are in role 18 months, you are an “expert.” The deals we are entering are super onerous and unfavorable to Optum, meaning more concessions and close to zero ability to actually use this AI and outsourcing to India they keep bragging about.

The lack of any tenure at all… Truly disturbing for such a gigantic company in a defensive/buttoned up sector. These companies and regulators are on to the problem too, if you follow up 6-12 months later and every time it goes to a dead email, you know the place is easy pickings with no institutional knowledge.

@ar Christ you're a mo--n. Many of the "security" requirements don't actually enhance security, and just waste engineering time that could be spent on addressing actual issues -- and engineers can't give input because leadership doesn't trust their engineers. All the while, these offshore teams who have taken over maintaining legacy apps (likely because the original engineering team got laid off) are doing workarounds to get the number down on some BS report with bad metrics, but avoid patching actual security vulnerabilities as well.

Maybe don't fu--ing comment on sh-t you're completely clueless about.

@ar no one disagrees that security is important. They disagree with the approach and heavy handed requirements with no actual support. They disagree with policies that contradict each other or are made for theater and not for the sake of real security.

If you are in a highly specific role you need to seek additional skills. Never build something that is single purpose for one highly specific industry (cough cosmos… facets). If you stay in positions that are not building your core skills and are only building your highly specific business knowledge, you will never be able to leave.

@a8 do some research on the “TEAM” model being implemented in 2026. It’s VBC and unless Oz dismantles it, that’s what everyone is expecting under MA for the next 5 years. BTW- Not sure it has to do with a specific president, but you do you!

Doesn't matter. Client list is it. That's the value we hope to sell. Everything shed to raise IOI % despite a smaller revenue/total profit dollars. They think "higher IOI % + client list = big multiple = better exit" plus maybe some really poorly executed, low margin partners. Who would buy is anyone's guess but they are NOT running this company to manage within.

Epic will put us out of business by simply being functional, less expensive, less bloated, more innovative, etc and built to exist post-for-profit healthcare/payers, and less evil and "not UHG". They won't need to buy us. Question is who do leadership thing will buy Optum. Microsoft? Amazon? Google? Oracle? PE?
