"I'm relatively new, and I’m not sure if that makes me a safer bet or an easy target. I know it’s often the higher earners who get let go first, and that’s definitely not me. But at the same time, being one of the most recent hires can sometimes be the main reason people are cut. What’s the situation here?

@OP top performers are usually targeted if they arent part of the inner circle of gossip or unethical behavior. being part of the inner circle only saves u for a short period of time. or until u fall out of favor with the inner circle.
It really is a cr-p shoot. Or Russian roulette. I've seen everyone from long-time pros to mediocre junior staff let go, and at various levels of pay and competence. I was a mid-earner, skilled at what I did, but definitely the non-conforming square peg in my department.
There are usually clear signs if you're next on the list: not being assigned new projects or invited to meetings you usually go to.
You say you're "relatively new." Well, don't let that stop you from keeping your skills—and resume—up to date. Use your network now to get a feel for what opportunities might be coming your way so you can jump ship on your terms.
@dj nailed it. Divine intervention is the only protection , regardless greater is ahead for all
the hard working people that mind their own business and don't su-k up to management are the ones that are usually cut. the lazy, alcohol, dr-g abusing gambling at casino types usually are safe
no one is safe. even if youre the one making the axe list.
If you are part of your executive’s inner circle then u will be safe whether you are remote or not. At least that’s how it worked in our small corporate department.
My friend who was part of the Nickelodeon blood bath last year shared with me that there was an excel doc that got leaked of people’s department titles, ages, and number of years worked. They made the cuts as a numbers game. Didn’t look at names or anything remotely to do with skill and value. Just went down the list to trim a few from each department. She said it was a true mix of all ages and levels.
To that end I think each division will have to handle their own way, many given a certain number to reduce by.
why would remote workers be targeted? my entire team is remote, does that apply to those under D.R.?
Remote workers are on the chopping block this time especially those that are in truly remote locations.
In some orgs, it’s a club. Long standing EVPs/SVPs/VPs will shed anyone not in the club. Even if you’re a productive IC, if you swim against the current you’ll get cut. The Ad Ops world on JW’s side is a prime example. That guy is the worst and doesn’t care.
if you don't su-k up enough
september- head of divisions got number amounts to decrease and had the room to do as they saw fit: sent names to HR weeks ahead time
my boss told me - this is my source if they are truthful
I saw some divisions- teams decimated but their Dir/VP/SVP remained .. made no sense
I have seen people promoted and then let go weeks later. Just remember it's not about you as a worker or person.
During the Sept 2024 layoffs there didn't appear to be much of a rhyme or reason to it
