Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Background check

I was in a pm role till 2023 sep, forced to become ic after that. Had a cr-p boss (prev manager was laid off on 2023) who always humiliated me mostly because I was earning more.laid off last year. I never had such a pathetic relationship with my manager. My worry is though I have been laid off will my manager have any say in my background verification for my next job? Does it depend on the level or HR or what is the process?

Agree with @av+1knra1w9p . This is correct. If you're applying at an external company (Not Citi), your Citi manager will NOT be contacted. The new employer will only verify dates of employment at Citi, and maybe your title and salary.

At the very least your dates of employment will be verified, and at most your title and salary.

If you're applying for jobs internally at Citi, the hiring manager and/or HR recruiter WILL most likely contact your current and past Citi managers.

Employers forget that prospective, current and former employees ARE CUSTOMERS TOO !

If we're treated badly or disrespectfully during the interview process, or even if we were eventually hired, Customers still remember and don't forget the painful process!

We can and will choose NOT to buy your products and services, as well as NOT recommend them to friends and relatives!

I previously worked for a competitor bank. But before they eventually hired me, it took over 1100 applications/resume drops during 3 years!

I was NOT a customer of that bank and Never will be! I told the HR rep this during the exit interview. HR and the employer are so dense, it was as if a light bulb suddenly turned on in their heads and only when I said this did they suddenly realize this.

Also, flagging the former employees' record as "not eligible for rehire" is NOT up to the employees' manager. Only HR can do this and HR must state on record a valid reason.

Unless the reasons are criminal activity (harassment, as$ault, stealing etc.), bad work performance is Not a valid reason since it's subjective.

Only in the Insurance industry and some others you're Not eligible for rehire if you're Fired for any reason including bad work performance. This policy is absurd and stone age antiquated since No one got hurt or was in danger.

If you're fired because of a layoff/RIF, employees are eligible for rehire.

Employment verification ensures you are not lying on your resume about your service time and dates. Big companies have a specific code associated with them, and there is a common service that most large firms tap into. This service simply provides proof of your employment dates and your level, while your manager has no say in the process. In fact, it is better for the firm if they do not say anything negative about you and stick strictly to the facts to avoid being sued. Managers are generally instructed not to give referrals one way or the other to minimize legal risks.

One thing that could happen if they do not like you is that they can mark you with a "do not rehire" flag for any future applications at this bank with a soul.

In the US, they’re only allowed to disclose corporate title and length of tenure to external companies.

Agree with a5+1knra1w9p.
If you're looking outside of Citi, your manager won't even be contacted. The most verification they will be looking for is proof you worked at said company, and length of tenure.
I had a similar situation with a bi--h manager at Capital One. She kept telling me,"oh, what am I going to say about you if I'm contacted by employers?" Nothing, you witch, because one, I didn't listen you as a contact person in the first place.
Companies are afraid of being sued if they bad mouth anyone, so now background checks just verify dates of employment.
Internal hire is completely different, however.

Europe: If outside of Citi then he won’t be able to do much as background verifications are confirmed by HR. It tends to be very minimal and factual such as length of service and title at the time. Does not even confirm responsibilities.

If internally, worst case scenario, he may have put “ineligible for rehire” on your file.
