Thread regarding Accenture layoffs

Delay the start date?

My start date was initially set to be in September 2020 but has since been pushed back until January 2021. My role is in Security in a large metro...

My school is offering a program to get a masters of science in engineering in 2 semesters finishing up in late April 2021. The program waives the GRE requirement, which is nice.

My question is for these next 6 months I can either do nothing besides simple jobs and travel or I can ask Accenture to push back my start date by a few months in order to get a masters of science degree and then begin working.

Do you guys think this is a good idea? What do you think?

Will my recruiter pull my offer?

I would definitely get the masters degree. Then when it's time for you to start tell your recruiter you are almost done and you need 30 days. There is no need for you to inform them of your every move right now. It's not relevant and there is a such things "giving out too much information". They will be impressed that you upskilled during this time, and took the initiative to further your education. They will also have to give you more money for having a master's, and you will become more of an attractive candidate by other consulting firms with your master's degree. I'm a Director at a Big4, and there is no way during these times I would give someone advice to just sit around and wait for a start date that's 6 months out. The company is always going to look out for themselves first, and may even decide not to hire in 6 months. Not scare you..always think positive, but still look out for yourself as a professional and keep your options open. Keep yourself marketable and get the master's degree.

Take care of your future first. It also gives you time to explore other opportunities that may open up to you as a result of your added education.

Nothing is a given in this market ! Even is they pushed back start date they can also push it back again and also recall offer ! nothing is know. So do what’s best for you !!

I would strongly suggest you put 'YOU' first before Accenture. As stated, Accenture can easily recind your job offer. Complete your goal for your Masters Degree; if nothing else, for your sake and your future. Nothing in the workforce is guaranteed as long as COVID-19 exists. Besides, even after you may join Accenture, your future is not guaranteed. They can let you go just as quick.

In the "real world" the only thing corporations care about is their bottom line. You need to learn now, that coporations do not care about their employees. Get used to it! Once you are hired, you are nothing more than a "pawn." If Accenture needs to strengthen their bottom line, employees are a "disposalble item." Easy come, easy go. Throughout your career, never get comfortable with your position and believe you are indisposible. You are a disposible employee. So always put yourself and your goals first and always keep an open mind. Your career path will change during your employment years. Complete your Masters Degree. In the long run, you will be happier.

@deqb agree 100%. Good advice. I waited 5 years after college to do my master’s. Well worth it to find out what you like and don’t like, what you’re good at.

I would not make any major life decision based on an offer letter, which can be easily rescinded at any time. They are keeping you on the hook in case they need you in the future. With the economy in flux and further layoffs looming, I would try to secure a job right away to weather the storm of the next couple of years. The Masters sounds like a good opportunity, but you can always pursue the degree after you've landed a job and gained some experience. Who knows what the job market will be like a year from now. From my many years in IT, I've seen that good solid experience will make you a better candidate than additional education.

of course they can pull your offer anytime it is not a binding contract how silly are you to write something so ignorant you have no career experience for this reason you both should get jobs dot-dot-dot start at McDonald's

As a fellow new joiner, this sounds like a really good opportunity. If for whatever reason Accenture needs to push our offers back further, this would be a win-win for both parties.

I don't see how they could pull your offer if you have already signed the contract. It wouldn't hurt to ask. I would just emphasize that you are asking so they do not believe you have jumped ship.
