I don't know where to start. My leader has just placed me on a CAP with a description that is just untrue and a corrective plan that lacks any detail. I'm not a perfect person, but I have been performing here for years, with performance scores of 4-5 over the past several. There is no way I can fulfill this CAP. It feels hopeless. It feels cruel. If you are going through this, you are not alone.

I was just put on performance cap for not meeting my sentiment, I take calls and this changes every day with whom I speak with. One day, I can get every disgruntled member and the next day , super nice, what a let down after being with this company for 16 year beginning with United Behavioral Health. Any suggestions ? julielng580@aol.com
@f3 you are completely wrong. They put people on CAPs who perform fine too. If they want you out they will make up reasons. It happens all the time. Performance sometimes can be a reason, but most definitely not always the case. Sometimes you didn't kiss the ring, so they want you out to make room for yes-men.
@f3 Not so. It can be because your manager is in I gonna get you mode. UHG has a lot of upper management , directors and VP’s that are actually mental ill. They take all kinds of meds and counseling. They just happen to be able to manipulate their environment. Some are liars, borderline sociopaths with a protected disability. Once you get on their bad side there is no stopping their agenda. So no it’s not always about performance. It could be as simple as you embarrassed them one day and now your getting the full taste of their instability
Do you have enough proof that you have been consistently performing good and no feedback was shared earlier ?
If you’re strongly against it, consider raising a grievance with all the proofs.
My sc-mbag of a manager did that to me back in March, and it was basically to checkmate me into being exited. If I pushed back on being termed, they had my review at a 2, so I'd have been CAP'd and termed with no severance.
Spineless fu--ing cu-t couldn't even have the conversation with me, he had his manager do it.
I seriously hope that this company is busted up and that these clueless twats in leadership all wind up on the streets - either that or more of the C-suite gets gunned down.
For all the people saying there is a performance problem; that’s not always true. First of all, a manager can put you on a CAP with little evidence. If you have a cr-ppy manager you they can do a lot of damage. Second, managers are forced to give people 2s to fit the stacked ranking system. You might be doing fine but your manager has to give you a poor ranking.
Again, a good manager can decide who the 2 is based on real metrics. A bad manager will do it based on their feeling and misunderstanding of what work is going on.
It doesn’t help that none of our engineering managers know anything about technology or software development.
You need to immediately start looking for another job. While you can definitely meet the requirements if they want you gone they want you gone.
I’ve been a 5 for three years and 4s for 3 years. I feel like I’m going to be put on a CAP because I got a new manager (my fourth in 3 years) that tosses me to the side and treats me as if I haven’t been performing more than anyone in our org. Oh well, hopefully I get severance.
Any idea if mental health therapists are being fired or let go? Where I’m at we have had no intakes so no one is able to hit RVU’s. We have our schedules open but no clients and we are hiring more clinicians but I don’t know how because like I said we are not having any intakes it doesn’t make sense. Should I be worried?
CAPs are for employees who don’t performance. Sound like there is a lack of performance in my book.
After reading everything in this thread, I must agree that numbers done lie.
Start by looking in the mirror at yourself. Take accountability for your own mess you created.
@d6 ha ha true… but Nico and Aimee have been long fired!!!!
File an Internal Dispute Resolution if you have a valid case, document every meeting with your manager. You are being targeted to be let go. Working harder won’t change things so do less, go on short term disability, play all the punk cards you can. Sorry you are going through this.
I need to agree with others this is on you. Not doing your job right has lead to being placed on a cap.
Has your role changed as that has affected my performance score in the past. Changing roles is like starting all over again.
@d8 this is true! If you e been a strong performer consistently, they want you gone. Start looking and make sure you tell your boss that you’ll do your best!
Time to start looking for a job outside the company.
Your fault for not doing your job.
Were you meeting your goals set forth by your business unit? Did your manager review this with you and how expectations were not met? This had to have been done prior to placing you on a CAP. Where is your accountability?
@a3 You nailed it, OP needs to leave on their own terms! OP don’t worry about anything else besides accepting they want you gone and are documenting to justify their coming actions. Don’t panic, so many better places to work than this Indian company!
@d1 we have some of the worst people I’ve met in my life. Been working several states in multiple fortune 50 companies. This company represents all there is wrong with corporate America. Instead of using BT as wake up call and renew ourselves to betterment of society and healthcare, we bring back the old guard and lock everyone to strategies from 10 years ago. The very person that setup 20 year roadmap for our United Values is back but never mentions it. SH knows he’s only here to stop the bleeding until new leader is chosen.
Btw There’s reasons why vendors bring young fresh young college graduate women for on site visit. Vendors know we have depraved leaders. This company is filled with soulless narcissistic se-----y depraved executives. Its sickening
I had a previous high level leader put me on a CAP and colluded with my direct reports to collect evidence and in some cases stoke fire and gave/ received ammo to use against me. Investigation and interrogations of my actions and I was lead to be a poor performer after years of 4-5 rating. It was miserable but I did the CAP action and nothing else. No where was HR there to defend me or give me advice. My employees kept anything I said in written and extemporaneous notes. All this because I kept my employees aligned to strategy and their accountability. They are all gone and RiFed. If you stay true to the United Values (low strategy these days), you may survive on CAP unless your leader just doesn’t like you and takes next steps. If your leaders care, then the CAP should be what it is. Not instrument of firing. Unfortunately managers have little or no support from corporate and many leaders don’t know what they are doing either. This too shall pass. You will find a right leader/org to thrive.
@aw you clearly don’t know what company you work for. A corrupt company with managers , directors who have multiple mental health issues, dr-g addiction, etc. ( if the employees could only see what kind of people are managing them).
Likely scenarios is out of the people left on your team, you are not in the "club" as much as the rest and, because your manager has to select one person as a "2", you were the easiest to pick. Doesn't mean your work isn't good or you are not performing well. To justify your 2 rating, they will gaslight you to help justify.
@a3
This post is accurate. I too was a leader and this is an actual practice.
@ah
What you're suggesting is a criminal act.
It is 100% because you aren’t doing good work. Do not pretend it is UHGs fault.
Two options 1: FMLA to extend 2: take it easy and look for another job, I think you will get severance if they decide to..
It's almost certain what the outcome will be
If you have any mental health conditions, you can go on a leave if you are getting to the end of your CAP and need to stretch out your employment. Obviously, your doctor would need to have enough to sign the papers so don't do this if you don't have a past history. Good luck.
Work is a dangerous place....hazards lurk around every corner....you can't be laid-off, fired, etc on workman's comp....golden ticket...you'll still be employed when the CEO is gone.
They did this to one of my colleagues because his salary was too high in order to get him to quit. He did.
Please immediately focus your energy into an EXTERNAL job search. They do this on purpose to get rid of you, HR and Legal back your direct tormentors, as they are part of the system of torment, and they are counting on you to be too traumatized by the entire experience to sue them so that they can keep your money. The best course of action is to minimize your trauma, secure your income, and then sue the sh-t out of them. Be sure to use the words "hostile environment" when speaking to them. Put as much effort as you need into the CAP so that they cannot counterargue that your performance is poor without Olympic-level mental gymnastics and goalpost moving. Also focus your energy on documenting every aspect of this horsesh-t clown show.
Same thing happened to me after consistent 4 and few 3s for over 10+ years. Senior Management forces direct management to pick someone to give a few 2s to, then immediate management argues on who to give the 2 to. Ultimately I got a 2 last year and was laid off. Sh---y tactic, good luck and I would look elsewhere
