Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

an i6 doing the same work as an i7 but paid less...

I started at Dell as an i6 in 2019 making 80k/year which I was pumped about at the time. 5.5/6 years later, I'm still an i6 but making 110k/year not including bonus. NOBODY on my team has been promoted in the time I've been on my team. Some of which I started with back in 2019.

My specific team is only 4 people. One of them is I think an i10 but he absolutely does a LOT more work than we do and is vital to the entire DFN. Then again, he was hired on to be the super sr engineer but I'd love to know what he makes.

Anyways, i'm an i6 and do the EXACT same work that my i7 colleague does but yet, am an i6. Now, I have no clue what the pay range is for an i6 compared to an i7 so for all I know, I am getting paid an i7 salary but, it'd be nice to have the i7 title after 6 years...

It'd be nice to get to the 130k mark but, at the rate this is going, that might be another 10 years lmfao

Not in sales and I'm in Texas if that matters..

@kg i7's are firmly above that payband in texas, and we're the cheapest state. Dell has been fking there juniors because they don't know better

@fh Well, considering that an i7 in my city/state makes between 77k - 134k, I'd say I'm doing pretty well as an i6.

@fh I'm looking elsewhere... trust me lol.

But does an i7 make different salaries depending on the org/department? A 30k salary increase seems like a LOT to me. That's a 30% increase - not good with math but it's a huge percent lol - and idk, if that's truly what a jump from an i6 to an i7 is then, fk Dell.

Like I said, I started at 80k as an i6 and over the last 5 years got to 110k. I kick myself now because when I was asked what I was looking for upon being hired, I said 80 to be on the safe side as I needed a job lol. I feel I could have easily gotten mid 90s now but, what's done is done. Didn't want to price myself out as a contractor competing against 5 others.

idk, I'm happy with my pay for the most part but would I like a 30k increase? Duh! I do have an interview with another fortune 500 company for basically my exact job and it starts at 111k and goes up to 180k. I could EASILY get 150-160k out of it. Hoping for the best :)

@f5 this is why you arent going to be promoted. Theyll only promote to retain if you're a flight risk, otherwise why bother paying you more.

@f6 also, jeeze 30k or 12% on your 110k salary? Sounds like you got the raw end of that and you took the bait. I7 is 140 min if you are promoted today.

Either accept your fate as someone who isn't going to get paid well, or jump ship. It's totally valid to sit there if you like it, but don't kid yourself. It will only hurt you to keep getting rejected for a promo if you really want it

@d6 So here's the thing that I'm confused over... Back in January I had an impromptu with my manager and was asked - theoritically - if I was offered 30k more, would I be willing to go into office. I said yes, DUH. Based off that convo I very much assumed it was related to a promotion - which, it turned out to be true.

I hear nothing further about it so in our next 1x1 I bring it up and am told that he initially was given a REQ to promote but, it was yanked away due to budget. However, he brought up the 30k increase again so, now I'm wondering if an i6 to i7 promotion was literally a 30k increase? I mean, that's a HUGE increase.

He was saying how he's been fighting to get a few of us promoted for years at this point and that in regards to money, it's far cheaper to promote those in India, Mexico, etc... than it is to promote in the US. Which is true, unfortunately...

Last year I got a 12% raise and he said something about "that should bring you up to where you should be" which, I wasn't sure what that meant but fk it... that was a huge pay raise lol. I guess thinking about it now, it may have meant that he brought me up to an i7 pay grade without the official title change/promotion?

@d2 See, that's the problem. I don't want to jump teams. I LOVE my team and even if I didn't, I have nowhere to jump to because all the i7 positions are based in Mexico or other countries lol. I also love being in FED so..

Having worked on the corp side for a while, FED is so much better in almost every possible way. We are mostly left alone during layoffs, we are a small group in which everybody knows everybody and personal relationships are absolutely formed, and best of all... I can actually understand everybody when they talk lmfao.

@e9 Yeah, that's what my manager told me as well and it's total BS. BS as in the way it works.
He's been a manager at Dell for I think 12 years now and said he's NEVER promoted anybody during Merit increase because as you said, it takes money away from others; and has always promoted via REQ's - backfilling, is my understanding. Which is honorable because, as much as I want a promotion I'd feel guilty taking away someone else's raise if he used up most of the raise money on my promotion.

Why is there not a "bucket" for raises and a "bucket" for promotions? "here's 50k for raises" and here's "30k for promotions."

I think most managers promote via REQ's and not merit increases because of the exact reason you stated. Problem is is that, if a manager isn't given a REQ or so for the year then, no promotions can happen.

My manager - well, "ex" manager now after the weird "reorg" in March... hasn't gotten any REQ's in YEARS due to "no budget." WTF????

Heck when I left Dell 2 years ago I was and I9, they replaced me with an I6. I reached out to the person via Linkedin and offered to answer any questions. After a couple of chats it was evident this person was so under-qualified. I sent a Linkedin message to my former manager. She said that she knew the person was under qualified and struggling, but she was directed to only hire an I6. She said she got the best of the unqualified candidates.

@e9 I thought it was based off the director level NOT the manager. That means you could win over neighboring managers and get promoted via their pool

I’m a manager. To move someone’s grade is incredibly hard using the yearly increase.

Each manager is given a budget that is a % of their teams wages. Let’s say 2% each team member.

Let’s say you require 6% to move you into the threshold to convert your grade to an i7. That means I will need to take the whole pay increases of 2 other team members and give them a 0% increase to give you your i7.

This might be possible in really big teams with lots of low performers but if you’re in a small team with lots of high performers it will be all but impossible.

If you aren’t happy with your grade you will need to apply for other teams.

They will happily give raises but never a title to match. It's weird.

If an i7 is below 100k they fked up. As an i7 that had a similar timeline to you, but moved teams last year, quit fking around and jump teams

@OP

You are getting in the i7 range, consider yourself lucky. Some i7'are still below 100K base mark.
